It was supposed to be an exercise on perspective, by drawing a house from life. If you used that device, then you’re not working out the math with the vanishing points and all that shit. This particular artist shouldn’t have been there, all his stuff looked just ok. Then he showed up with a perfectly drawn house, and was accused.
I was in my fourth year of art school when an instructor failed a kid on an assignment and accused him of using this device. No one in the class had ever heard of this thing. The internet didn’t exist back then. Someone found one and brought it to his class and we were playing around with it. It was pretty cool, but it felt like a hack when the purpose of being there and paying all that money was to improve our rendering skills. I was there to learn animation, so it was of no use to me. Now, I want one.
