I went to an airshow in the early 80s. Being in the Air Force at that base I was able to stand near the SR-71 as it throttled up. It took off and disappeared within seconds. It was the loudest noise I ever heard! I originally had joined the army as a tank gunner, I thought I knew what loud was until I heard that SR-71.

Humorous story at the end about not knowing what he was hired to work on. I was an electronic tech, I've worked on data communications system, at remote satellite tracking stations, large main-frame computer centers in the 80s and 90s. In 1999 I went for job interviews with a defense contractor, took electronics tests, personality tests, filled out forms to re-instate security clearances. Any question I asked was answered vaguely. Eventually offered the job, that would involve 'international travel', and about 50% more than is making at the time.. I accepted the offer and asked for more details about the job. They told me they couldn't tell me until my security clearance investigation was finalized. Until then I had to show up at an office from 8am-4pm 5 days a week and basically read newspapers, books, whatever until my clearance was official. It ended up being an incredibly boring 5 months. Finally got the clearance and had to go to a different building to get my 'security briefing'. I was hired to work on one of the systems aboard the U2 at USAF bases, and be subject to be moved around to where ever they wanted me. Was told not to tell anyone what I specifically did, sshhhh... secret squirrel stuff. Finally get to the overseas location, take a local taxi to the base, and what building I was going to (the taxi was allowed on base), the driver says "Oh, you're going to the U2 squadron". I get there and everyone is wearing U2 caps and t-shirts. Some secret.
