Suppose I want to build a computer with as few back doors as possible, but also as "fast" as possible.
At what point did computers stop being only your own property? I want to build one from right before then.
So given no IME and no UEFI; what models can you recommend? No I'm not going to be using it for gaming because I'm a real man. 486? 586? That's about when I stopped paying attention to computer hardware.

Can you actually replace your motherboards BIOS/UEFI with coreboot? Is there a tutorial on how to do this? I hate my motherboards UEFI thing. Also, it takes forever to boot.
Why concern yourself with that when you can build a decent firewall and run iptables? There's no such thing as an unhackable system. Backdoors have always been theorized. 486 had it's own set of fun. So, if you want a fast machine that's clean never connect it to the web. If you want a machine that'll be raped by the web at least wear some rubber.
I've had my air-gapped PC hacked. The sound system is part of the networking stack. There are mics hidden in motherboards. The PC received a chirp from my cell phone when an attorney activated a "feature activation" and he pwned the PC.
I mean the ones that can be utilized without physical access. Even without backdoors, once physical access is possible you are no longer safe. They could just add a hardware keylogger.
The thing about running a Pentium or whatever is you will be stuck with an OS that likely hasn't been updated in forever. It's possible that a modern Linux would work, but I'm not sure. An old OS will be bad because it will have numerous known security holes that never will be patched.
Probably the first post here, which I'm going to upvote, is the best you can do.
Kali? Out of all OSes? God. Kali turned into shit the moment it was transformed from backtrack. Since the beginning. Maybe backtrack was shit too, i was too green to notice then.
If you want better security for yourself, it's not about specific OS, but the configuration and setting you have installed in your linux system(arch, mint etc). Yes there is Tails and variations, but they provide security and trade off usability. If you want offensive security, then yes, go ahead, install kali. Although i would recommend arch with aur and if you really want to go further, then there is archstrike. Although, it's more about specific tools and scripts. Kali just has packages installed by default so people can feel l33t.

The government still has backdoors into everything. They can play beeps that make analog tape recorders from the 1980's stop working.
