A certain big box hardware store in my state has for some time now been hiring an in-house sales team to harass you while you shop ("Hi, how are you today, sir? Listen, when was the last time you replaced your (furnace, kitchen cabinets, floors, etc.)?"). Normally, I'm pretty polite. I've figured out if I just simply answer that I recently updated and I'm happy with what I've got, they'll usually just thank me and walk away.

But I had a woman in this role flip out on me because, on this one particular day, I was in a hurry. In fact, I'd been to the store twice already (that day) and dealt with the sales pitch...twice already. It was one of those days. The third time in the store, she approached me and I just said, "Thank you, but I don't have time for this right now." I smiled. I said this politely. She became indignant. The short of it: she said, "What an asshole," as she was walking away.

I was surprised, but I didn't really react to her. Before leaving the store I mentioned it to customer service, and I haven't seen her again.

I fucking hate being predictably approached by these kinds of salespeople. The part that pisses me off the most is the seeming expectation that we're impolite if we don't allow them to chat us up and instead cut them off immediately ("Thanks, but I'm not interested."). I barely have enough time for the people I love most. No, I don't owe you a fucking second Mr. Are-You-Happy-With-Your-Current-Cable-Provider.
