How many use salt with sandwiches besides sauce?

submitted by Conspirologist to Food 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 11:12:28 ago (+11/-1)     (Food)

In the beginning I was using only mayo with chicken sandwich. When I tried it with some salt added, it tastes way better. What about you? Do you like salt added besides sauces?

Depends on the sandwich. Chicken sandwich? Yes, absolutely, salt and pepper. I make tuna salad and add salt, pepper, and cayenne. Some things definitely need a little salt not to add saltiness but to intensify the flavor of the main ingredient. It's one of the reasons why salted chocolate is popular.

Thanks. I've never thought to add pepper to chicken sandwich.

Old Bay and/or everything seasoning is good in Tuna as well.
However, if you're salting processed chicken, that shit already has too much salt.

I'm using only fresh grilled chicken.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 17:58:27 ago (+0/-0)

Agreed. The only chicken sandwiches I make are from roasted or grilled chicken. Fresh, not processed.

Old Bay ... That brings back memories. I used to see a can of that in my mother's kitchen. I don't remember ever trying it, but I think I'm going to now.

Only to a chicken sandwich. Salt, pepper, mayo, tabasco, chopped up jalapenos, cheese.

Mixing the tabasco sauce with the mayo is nice.

Man, I love that idea.

it's even better with a really flavorful sauce like the last dab.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 18:07:44 ago (+0/-0)

The Last Dab, eh? Thanks, I'll track that one down. Tabasco is usually too vinegary for me.

[ - ] ToNigIsToNog 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 19:25:30 ago (+1/-0)

it's great flavor for hot sauce. but it's hot. so just a dab will do you.

Salt on tomato is a must

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 14:31:21 ago (+1/-0)

Try oregano with tomato. Thank me later.

[ - ] mannerbund 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:23:02 ago (+2/-0)

Salt, pepper, garlic, it depends on the sandwich, but yeah. Garlic is the only one that I don't often see on people's sandwich and never see on a Deli order form.

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:34:21 ago (+1/-0)

By garlic do you mean garlic slices or garlic paste?

[ - ] _Obrez 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 16:36:53 ago (+1/-0)

Garlic powder or garlic salt I presume

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 16:44:29 ago (+1/-0)

Garlic slices or garlic paste are fresh and have all the vitamins.

[ - ] _Obrez 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 17:00:00 ago (+1/-0)

Convenience or recipe may prohibit.

[ - ] mannerbund 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 17:54:36 ago (+1/-0)

Garlic powder if I am short on time, or perhaps smashed/blended garlic cloves (as a crude paste, but with a lot of flavor).

[ - ] Ragnar 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:52:27 ago (+2/-0)

How do you assemble your sandwich. The way my mom did was to make a spread first. You shred the chicken and add mayo, salt, black pepper, celery, tiny red onion, and itsy bitsy mustard. Mix. That’s your sammy spread. Now, spread it on a slice o’bread and sandwich it. Yumminess guaranteed.

[ - ] xmasskull 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:13:04 ago (+1/-0)

Toast the bread first.

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:32:06 ago (+1/-0)

Toast bread is great with ham and cheese sandwich. Add mayo later.

[ - ] xmasskull 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:59:02 ago (+1/-0)

Bingo!

[ - ] HughBriss 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 18:01:29 ago (+1/-0)

Good recommendation. There are so many sandwiches that can be improved by toasting the bread first. I particularly like scrambled egg or egg salad sandwiches on toasted bread.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:16:02 ago (+0/-0)

I’m not sure the texture goes well with this particular sandwich. Fresh and soft white bread is what makes it.

I've always made chicken sandwich with basic ingredients. Chicken, mayo, tomato, lettuce. It tastes fresh an yummy. Sometimes with less ingredients the sandwich is tastier.

[ - ] Ragnar 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:14:38 ago (+1/-0)

I agree with you actually. My mom added tiny vegetables maybe to make us eat dumb veggies or to stand out at her stupid coffee mornings. Either way, I like her food.
But when I make sandwiches myself, I just add chicken, mayo, and salt, tbh.

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 13:28:32 ago (+1/-0)

Try adding tomato and lettuce. It tastes amazing.

[ - ] con77 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:32:04 ago (+2/-0)

add salt to nothing. its already there

[ - ] Fascinus 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:45:46 ago (+2/-0)

You're missing out on a lot of flavor, bro.

[ - ] Hadza 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 15:25:53 ago (+1/-0)*

It's honestly better when you're used to bland food and able to stomach it. It's easier to just salt it than to make yourself like it unsalted, in case you'll ever have to. It's applicable to almost anything, really - it's easier to have fun if you enjoy boring stuff.

[ - ] Fascinus 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 15:35:10 ago (+2/-0)

I can relate :)

Set aside a certain number of days, during which you shall be content with the scantiest and cheapest fare, with coarse and rough dress, saying to yourself the while: “Is this the condition that I feared?” It is precisely in times of immunity from care that the soul should toughen itself beforehand for occasions of greater stress, and it is while Fortune is kind that it should fortify itself against her violence. In days of peace the soldier performs maneuvers, throws up earthworks with no enemy in sight, and wearies himself by gratuitous toil, in order that he may be equal to unavoidable toil. If you would not have a man flinch when the crisis comes, train him before it comes.

Exactly my point, hahaha. I'm sometimes amazed how easily frens (far-right ethno-nationalists) understand each other

Our exchange reminded me of this: https://files.catbox.moe/98xll0.jpg

Look to the sodium content of your diet. You might be surprised at just how hard it is to get away from salt. And yes, it's most likely in your meat as well. Even some butchers will inject brine or add a layer of salt to their product.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:48:32 ago (+0/-0)

You must be crazy

[ - ] anothergoatinthewall 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 20:04:17 ago (+0/-0)

You're not alone. Family history of kidney problems, one person had it Directly linked to sodium and had to adjust to a life of excluding Anything with it. I do it prophylactically so I don't suffer the medical nighmare my dad and uncle have dealt with. Add salt to nothing, but eat things that have been salted as part of their process (bacon comes to mind).

I think the one exception to this is the yearly turkey. I salt-brine that before smoking so it doesn't turn into jerky, but use far less salt than the original recipe called for.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 11:38:27 ago (+2/-0)

Recently I found out my mom puts salt in tuna fish and now I know why hers tasted better.

[ - ] xmasskull 2 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 14:00:54 ago (+2/-0)

A little Parmesan cheeze brings an added zip.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 16:31:41 ago (+1/-0)

Excellent point.

[ - ] ToNigIsToNog 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 18:07:52 ago (+1/-0)

I salt almost everything as I was a chef and have encountered way too many people afraid of seasoning.

If you add any veg to your sandwich but lettuce and pickle you should give it some salt. I use large grain usually but on some things or brine I use regular iodized.

[ - ] HowDoYouDoFellowNiggers 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 20:06:40 ago (+0/-0)

Dude yea. I discovered salt and pepper on a sandwich was excellent when I worked in food service, and was just discussing this with a friend recently. Interesting coincidence

[ - ] Nosferatjew 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 18:24:26 ago (+0/-0)

Salt is life. Iodized sea salt, to be specific.

[ - ] _Obrez 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 16:55:17 ago (+0/-0)

Maybe I'm weird but I prefer a hot meal in just about every context so I've started making my sandwiches a new way. I've taken to freezing my bread so I never have to worry about it molding which necessitated the toasting at first

small pan big enough for two slices of bread in put the bread on spray it with your favorite oil or butter lightly shake some garlic powder or garlic salt over top pop it in the oven on 350 for about a minute, i just let it go until the pan is hot enough to melt a stick of cold butter, not the whole stick obviously, i use the tip of the stick to cover the surface where the bread goes, the same side as the garlic goes face down into the now buttered pan and we build an open faced sandwich, cheese first, I like swiss and pepper jack but provolone works with basically every meat and is the best for time and heat in this method. Then meat on the other side two slices of honey ham fresh grated black pepper and 3 more slices of honey ham on top. I get more than enough salt elsewhere and I use garlic salt on the bread so I don't salt the meat but it's ham. Its done when the cheese is melting but I wait till the cheese bubbles so I get the bread a bit more toasted and I'm also typically prepping something else on the side like a hash brown patty or a bowl of instant potatoes so that's just how the timing works out

I have a really great sandwich and a hot side and it's about the fastest hot thing I can make aside from eggs. Good breakfast. If you're watching your weight do eggs instead of potatoes for the side.

Sounds tasty. But I'm too lazy to buy a horizontal toaster.

[ - ] _Obrez 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 17:01:02 ago (+0/-0)

I just do it in an oven

[ - ] Paradoxical003 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:54:13 ago (+0/-0)

I put seasoning salt on pork ham, shave it down, and put in my sandwiches along with gravy or BBQ sauce. Veggies are usually whatever I have lying around, celery or carrots work quite well.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:51:21 ago (+0/-0)

Unless I know there isn't already a ton of sodium in the ingredients, I don't add salt.

Pretty sure salty is a "flavor" your tastebuds can react to (sweet, salty, sour and savory). Adding salt just makes it easier to "light up" those tastebuds.

[ - ] Not_a_redfugee 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 11:48:11 ago (+0/-0)

Salt and a lot of pepper and mayo, pickles, cheese, ham, and 3 bread slices. Like from the top down it would be bread, mayo, pickles, cheese, salt n pepper, ham, bread, cheese, ham, more mayo, bread. Triple decker.

[ - ] Conspirologist [op] 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 11:50:43 ago (+1/-0)

Sorry, but pickles, cheese, and ham have already salt. You are definitely exaggerating with salt.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:49:24 ago (+0/-0)

Way too much, man. De-complicate your sandwich

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 1.9 yearsJul 13, 2022 12:52:23 ago (+1/-0)

That sort of thing with more layers used to be called a Dagwood sandwich.
