Because if it was nicer druggies would steal it, and sell it. They would also be trying to break into supply closets.

Why is the tp dispenser and paper towel dispenser locked in public buildings and restaurants, but the same restaurant might have a ipad tablet at the host stand that anyone could steal? The answer is druggies steal supplies.

Marriott is hit and miss these days

Stayed at a Courtyard in Bumfuck, AR on a business trip not too long ago, and was legitimately impressed. Clean, spacious room. Comfortable bed. Quiet. $100.

Although I'm sure the same experience at one in, say, Austin, would have been $250 minimum.
