Subsequent dives showed the hull plating bent outwards. Millions of rounds of Remington ammo was brought to the surface from the wreck site.
A major part of the reason the US was launched into the war was because of melodramatic (((media))) coverage of the sinking. There was even an animated cartoon recreating the event, one of the first realistic animations in history.
