Will 20k cash even buy a decent used vehicle anymore?

submitted by RomanSalute to cars 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 11:47:27 ago (+23/-0)     (cars)

I'm looking online and all of the used light SUVs are 25k+. Even as far back as 2017 models.

That being said, does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking a newer model Subaru outback.

Im looking for something that checks off everything in this list:

Decent fuel economy
Easy to fix/abundant spare parts in the US

Short list, I know.

I can go as high as 30k, but I wanted to stick to 20.

I member when I could buy a car for 400 bucks and it would last me a year or more.
It would be old , need some work , but nothing crazy.

I feel like people born in the 90s or later really have no idea of what a once fairly normal society we had at one time

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 11 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 12:06:40 ago (+11/-0)

I've looked at some magazines from the 80s someone had when I was a kid in the 90s(some old people kept their magazines for YEARS), and I remember there being a brand new sports car for $3000 and some change.

Inflation hurts. A lot.

[ - ] Weredawg 5 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 12:41:43 ago (+5/-0)

The 70s and 80s must have been a hell of a time for car enthusiasts. I'm old enough to remember the ass-end of the 80s, everybody in my family had cars that I'd love to have now, but can't talk myself into paying the current asking prices.

[ - ] WhiteCollarCriminal 8 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 12:48:28 ago (+8/-0)

My first car was a 1969 Firebird 350 I bought for $500 in 1979. Bought it from a family friend. What a fucking car! Can you even imagine being 15 and having a car like that? The guy I bought it from was a car enthusiast and the car was mint. Only thing wrong with it was the transmission leaked a bit from sitting for a year after he bought his wife a new car and he didn't want to trade the Firebird. Put a can of that trans leak sealer in and it never leaked again. I'd do unnatural things to have that car today!

[ - ] Weredawg 2 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 16:32:16 ago (+2/-0)

Man, I have always loved Firebirds. Trans Ams are my favorite cars by a long shot. Almost got one once, but got fucked over. It was a '78 with the 400, needed a rebuild and I was happy to do it.

[ - ] Epictetus 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:25:17 ago (+0/-0)

78 vette pace car, 350 bored something over, chrome headers and unpacked side pipes, shift kit from a dirt track car of my uncles...

Had it for a week before my dad realized I was a fucking idiot and took it away.

Buy something built in the late 90s/early 2000s private sale from the elderly. You can pick up Buicks and Lincolns with under 100k miles for under $10k. I got a Town Car in great condition with 47k miles for $9k. Only needed to replace the headlamp assemblies because the lenses were hazy and replace the washer fluid tank and lines that had aged out. In the five years I've owned it I've only had to change the alternator and the air suspension, which is fairly cheap and easy.

[ - ] germ22 4 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 15:18:12 ago (+4/-0)

I have a 2006 Town Car. Amazing ride, and no issues with it ever. Doesn't even burn that much fuel, especially considering how large the car is. Around where i am the prices for Town Cars has gone up sharply, it's hard to find a one with less than half million miles on it.

[ - ] lord_nougat 3 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 16:41:25 ago (+3/-0)

Those are hard to find for under $20k now! At least around here.

[ - ] Spaceman84 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 22, 2022 13:08:33 ago (+1/-0)

Mine is also a 2006. Nothing wrong with the Mercury Grand Marquis or Crown Vic, or any Buick with a 3800 motor. The LTC is just the best because of the air ride. Which reminds me that I need to adjust the ride height. The new bags have settled by 1/4" since I put them on a year ago.

[ - ] gimpyoldman 6 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 12:46:29 ago (+6/-0)

Find a good, honest mechanic (I know, stop laughing). Buy a 10-15 year old small SUV. Get it professionally detailed, new tires, and have your mechanic rebuild/replace the engine and inspect all the suspension.

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 4 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 13:23:09 ago (+4/-0)*

I actually know an honest White mechanic.

[ - ] gimpyoldman 6 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 13:38:51 ago (+6/-0)

I moved to a small (pop under 2K) TX town. The A/C in my 97 GMC pickup died last summer. The wife won't ride in the truck this summer (it's already hitting the low 90s here) until I get it fixed. We have a 2012 Camry that gets 30mpg so we take that most of the time. Half a block from our house is a mechanic, took the truck there. Turns out his dad built our house in the 60s. Nice guy in his late 50s, early 60s. Told him about the wife not wanting to ride in the pickup without the A/C. He asked me if I really wanted it fixed (old married guy joke). He found some valve stuck and replaced it, $200. 10 years ago I had a Taurus the A/C died on and the dealer charged me $1000 to fix.

[ - ] HeyJames 2 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 20:56:22 ago (+2/-0)

The expansion valve will fix it for a while but what caused that valve to plug in the first place was likely material from the compressor. Would be advisable to replace the compressor, dryer and flush your evaporator core and condenser in the near future.

But, don't listen to me mechanics are all out to get you.

[ - ] gimpyoldman 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:05:09 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks for the tip. We hardly ever drive anymore. Usually, once a month to take trash to the dump. But it sure is nice to have A/C here in south east TX in the summer.

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:22:53 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah air conditioning is one of those things where it is better off just replacing your compressor every once in a while (like 150k miles or so) and flushing it rather than waiting for it to lock up one day. Once it does you literally need to replace everything or the material that is in there will simply cause the failure to repeat. Keeping your serpentine belt, clutch fan, and pulleys healthy goes a long way to keeping all your accessories from exploding as well.

[ - ] CHIRO 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 14:46:24 ago (+1/-0)*

Me too. He loved cars and working on them. He'd do all of the work I needed for the cost of parts.

Unfortunately he moved across state to take a teaching position at a tech school. Now I've been to the dealer once or twice because, ya know, I like getting bent over and raped in public.

[ - ] FluffyBunnySlippers 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 14:31:41 ago (+0/-0)

Good mechanics exist, I know 3 in my area. Life is too short to work with bad people.

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 20:58:53 ago (+0/-0)

All the good mechanics refuse to work for retail customers anymore. All of us who are worth a shit went to heavy duty and fleet a long time ago.

[ - ] ruck_feddit 4 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 13:02:12 ago (+4/-0)

Yes, you can certainly get a nice used vehicle for under $20k. Honda SUVs, jeep wranglers, etc are a big no. Something like a Cadillac SRX gets super cheap after 5-6 years.

You'd do well to hit Autotrader for ideas. Filter out anything newer than 6 years, 4wd/awd, miles, etc. You'll be surprised the makes/models showing up that you never thought of.

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 2 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 13:25:34 ago (+2/-0)

Right on. I haven't been car shopping in so long I forgot about some of the better car buyer websites

[ - ] ruck_feddit 2 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 14:08:41 ago (+2/-0)

I'm not advocating for buying online, but it's a good way to see what's out there. You can set it to show within 100 miles or so of you. Then you can just call or show up at the dealer/lot.

You mentioned Subaru, but they don't really come down in price as much as they should. I looked at those for the great AWD, but I didn't want everyone thinking my wife was a lesbian.

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 14:39:09 ago (+0/-0)

I haven't made a new vehicle purchase in three years or so. At the time, I got a Jeep with 20k miles for $14k at a used auto dealer. It had been on the lot for a while; that had me worried. I was thinking problems with these VSTs on the lower end models. Had my own guy check it out and he said it was in great condition. I got out, in the end, several thousand under the blue book value and that was with the 100k mile b2b warranty. It's only got about 50k miles on it now, and no issues. It's a shit box little rattle cage, but it gets good gas mileage and it is great in the snow.

The prices are going up no doubt, but people also need to realize that these dealerships are hurting like motherfuckers. Do a little research. Use their website and find the deals they aren't just throwing in your face if you wait to just walk onto the lot like a moron. Of course they want to get you into their certified used Hyundai from last year for $27k. I went in knowing exactly what I wanted and exactly what I had to trade.

But you're still better off going private; I wish families were closer and thought more conservatively about how to get the most value out of things by keeping things in the family.

I lucked out and found a neighbor who just bought a new tesla selling a y2k Mercedes CLK320 in awesome old lady garage queen car condition for cheaper than I paid for the beater one I already had. Totally good car; good handling, decent mileage, adequate power. Oh, and I can work on it myself!

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:10:30 ago (+1/-0)

The early 2000s and 1990s Mercedes are actually good. This is when they were built with maintenance and durability in mind still. Mercedes lost their way shortly after and now they're all plastic shit boxes.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:41:52 ago (+0/-0)

Agreed. And the 70s ones and earlier are even more durable and maintainable!

But a few of the new plastic shitboxes are *awesome* plastic shitboxen!

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:13:23 ago (+1/-0)

Jeeps are good. Yeah they're made with some cheap parts but it's a RWD solid axle platform. Super easy to fix. Prefer the older ones with the AMC straight six. That pentastar has more power but you can't beat that inline reliability

[ - ] CHIRO 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 22, 2022 00:40:36 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah the straight six is ideal, but everything has to be so fucking compact now. I like the solid axle as well, but it does have disadvantages for a daily driver on some of the worst roads in the country. The body roll be real. But don't go thinking I'm knowledgeable when it comes to cars. Unfortunately I am not.

If you are looking for an outback get a Honda CRV or Rav4 instead. Subaru’s have a head gasket issue every 100k miles that they have never fixed

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 16:47:35 ago (+0/-0)

But it's easy to fix yourself in a couple of hours [per head].

[ - ] Native 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 17:03:13 ago (+1/-0)

No it’s not. It’s not easy. I’ve had to do it. It’s expensive if you have to pay to do it and time consuming for a selfmade mechanic

[ - ] HeyJames 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 21:16:40 ago (+1/-0)

Buying honda will never do you wrong. Good cars and repairs are always straight forward. Even the v6 FWD cars have plenty of room compared to most to get in there.

I have a 2008 trailblazer I bought back in 2011 with only one previous owner. It only had 60k miles when I got a hold of it.

That's a bit annoying to remove that much to gain access to the bulb housing, but it's not that bad. Headlamps last for quite a few years.

I also never double replace bulbs lol. I've never heard of that being a rule of thumb.

I generally want a Subaru because I have always heard they last quite a while.

That was before the meme reasons.

I got a 10 year old subaru outback w/ 140k miles on it earlier this year for ~12k. On outbacks especially it seems it is heavily reliant on how old of a model and the mileage range you're willing to accept.

If you go with an outback, make sure to get a '14 or newer though. I guess they put a more dependable tranny in it starting mostly that year. I had a '14 at one point but hit a deer and totaled it. It was a damn fine vehicle, but the '12 is good too.

I don't plan on paying sticker price.

[ - ] MelGibson 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 13:53:51 ago (+0/-0)

Just FYI that’s no longer a good deal for used and new car dealers. They get a commission from the bank loan. If you go in there and mention you are paying cash.. you won’t get a deal and there will be no wiggle room at all. Seriously.. avoid mentioning cash to these jew car dealers until the very last moment.

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 1 point 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 14:45:49 ago (+1/-0)

Oh, no. I'm not letting them know I have cash until they start pulling out paper work for the car I choose.

That would be retarded. Not very art of the deal.

[ - ] heebiejeebies 2 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 16:48:05 ago (+2/-0)

I've had friends go in and get a bank loan or financing from the dealership to get a good discount, and then pay the whole thing off on the first bill due.

Makes the jews seethe.

Just make sure there is no penalty for paging early and you're set.

Everyone is going to advertise the highest price of their car that they think they can get away with.

Here's what you do. Find the car you want. Look up Kelly Blue Book price.
Tell the owner that you want to buy the car BUT
1. He needs to get a 100 point inspection (you'll pay)
2. He will get TOP Kelly Blue Book price minus the cost to repair failed inspection items.

Some of the 70-80's classics are very cheap!

I recently saw a 1970 Mercedes with only 18,000 original miles being sold for under $14k.

Most people don't look at classics and the market is flooded because people need money more than their old cruiser.

That car was in perfect shape.

It's worth a look.

It was a sweet ride.

Sadly it was on a YouTube tour of a massive classic car showroom.

But I was stunned at the great value.

I'm Scottish.

Do only certain models have the 22R motor?

Good call. But you're looking at the 80s with that engine. Also, a carb (not a big deal). However, as much as I love Toyotas, do not get any 4Runner or Tacoma with the 3vze engine. They were known to blow gaskets and have shitty performance. Those engines were roughly 91-95 (correct me somebody if I'm wrong). 96 4 runners had the much more reliable 5vze engines. Get them if you can. However, as a '94 4runner owner, I'd gladly go with the 22R motor over the 5vze.

What happened to your car OP?

[ - ] RomanSalute [op] 0 points 2.0 yearsMay 21, 2022 15:03:38 ago (+0/-0)

She still runs, I just want a newer model. She's a 2008 and I bought her in 2011 sporting 60k miles and on previous owner.

Over a decade of loyal service. I'll probably keep it as a second beater car.

Do you really need a SUV? If a sedan will get the job done Camry, Corolla, Civic, or Accord. If you need SUV-ish capabilities and want to go dirt cheap mid-90 roadmaster wagon. With an LS fuel economy won't be great but you can tow and have 3 rows of seats for 10 to 12 grand.
