My pregnant wife has been really itchy lately, so she asked her doctor about it, who responded by prescribing her an anti-anxiety, sedative psych med.

This doctor basically tried to give her shut-the-fuck-up pills, instead of even attempting to address her questions about her itchiness. This is what passes for "practicing medicine" these days. Pathetic. Mrs. Nosferatjew will not be filling this prescription.

EDIT: for those of you out there who think what I've described here is cholestasis, it is not. Cholestasis is characterized by sudden intense itchiness WITHOUT a rash, and my wife has a rash, and has had one, that has spread, since this started.. What she is dealing with is most likely PUPPP:

Increase potassium intake. Get something called "lite salt" made by Morton salt at the grocery. 50% potassium and sodium chloride instead of all sodium chloride. Also take magnesium.
Also lots of vitamin d in case it's a immune system reaction.

These are just basic health things everyone should do and almost nobody does.

I broke my back a decade ago, which was obvious in the ex ray and even noted “fractured L-4 Pars”
, my doctor said I had nothing but common degeneration.
After 2 years of receiving no help and I had to figure out the broken back myself by getting all my records cause I still couldn’t return to work.
So when I made a stink about pain after 2 years, even my new doctor just prescribed me anti anxiety psych meds… “to change my mind about the pain”…
Actually had to teach multiple doctors that discs are capable of generating a protein that can cause pain. At least 3 doctors told me flat out the can’t.

Family general practitioners are not doctors, they’re glorified service technicians heavily paid and highly trained to offer you a Pharma solution stead of referring you to a real doctor, which are now called specialists.

Any competent doctor would have realized an itchy pregnant woman has either PUPPP or Choliostasis. I took a blood test because my arms and hands got itchy when I was pregnant. You dont fuck around with this stuff, why would a so called doctor prescrbe powerful drugs to a woman with child?!

Probably dry skin. I've been getting itchy at night and when I wake up. I take showers earlier in the day now and use moisturizer which has helped. I found that applying the 'Speed Stik' type of deodorant to the annoyingly itchy area stops it right away. The green kind, not the dry white kind.

This sounds like classic Cholestasis -- exactly like it was with my wife and child. The itching came out of nowhere and the doctor rushed here in for delivery because this could kill your child.

And sorry, but your doctor is a stupid shit and you need to get a new doctor! As soon as my wife's doctor heard she was a "little bit itchy" he freaked out and she went to the delivery room right then in there. This was about 10 years ago. She had blood work done after the fact and it was Cholestasis. This condition occurs during pregnancy and it can be very serious and dangerous for your child.

Ok that's good to know. I'm no doctor, I just went through this ordeal with cholestasis and all the associated problems, and it all started with the wife being itchy. Might not hurt to have blood work done if you haven't already.

This would seem to indicate that fat is important to a diet in order to maintain vitamin k levels. And of course doctors for years told people not to eat fat for their heart. And we now know that vitamin k keeps calcium from sticking into your arteries instead makes it go to your bones so by telling people to avoid fat doctors basically insured that calcium built up in arteries. Scurvy only occurred in sailors with no access to fruits at sea. Heart disease was almost unheard of until what, the 1920s? Atherosclerosis in antiquity is supposedly found in Egyptian mummies according to some low carb maniac gurus. But even if true, they probably did have vitamin C deficiency as their diet was extremely high in grains.

I think we had this discussion earlier too and the link you sent (same here) is to a biased site. It has been scientifically shown the absorption of factory made ascorbic acid is shit compared to real complex C. Fruits, the best source of C, also come with lots of nutrients to help absorption of C. Saying take ascorbic acid and you will be healthy is like saying just take your vitamin D and never get any sun and you will be fine. Ever known a very healthy man who never sees the sun? The point is modern medicine is extremely prone to isolating individual factors and treating things in silos.

Why did Pauling get cancer if C is a panacea? This is a rhetorical question, of course, but ascorbic acid is not vitamin C.

It's used off-label as an anxiolytic for people who can't or shouldn't take benzodiazepines (like alcoholics). It is not a psych medicine nor is it a sedative. It's a 1st generation antihistamine, maybe a little stronger than Benadryl. It makes you drowsy like all drugs of this class. It's also a very good first line of treatment for someone presenting with non-specific itching.
