My pregnant wife has been really itchy lately, so she asked her doctor about it, who responded by prescribing her an anti-anxiety, sedative psych med.

submitted by Nosferatjew to whatever 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 03:55:24 ago (+57/-1)     (whatever)

This doctor basically tried to give her shut-the-fuck-up pills, instead of even attempting to address her questions about her itchiness. This is what passes for "practicing medicine" these days. Pathetic. Mrs. Nosferatjew will not be filling this prescription.

EDIT: for those of you out there who think what I've described here is cholestasis, it is not. Cholestasis is characterized by sudden intense itchiness WITHOUT a rash, and my wife has a rash, and has had one, that has spread, since this started.. What she is dealing with is most likely PUPPP:

Is it hydroxyzine? That's basically benadryl and it helps with itching too.

[ - ] GoldenAgeWhen 3 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 06:37:40 ago (+3/-0)

Say what you want about pharma, but hydroxyzine is great.

It seems this drug is counterindicated in early pregnancy because of fetal abnormalities in lab animals including hypogonadism. Seems like total overkill. Was the doctor a shitskin or a wahmen or a kike? Did your wife have the common sense to know this was a bad plan or did nosferajew have to splain?

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 7 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 09:59:16 ago (+7/-0)*

Wahmen. And no, she did not have that sense, in part because she is desperate for relief from the itchiness. I had to splain, in depth, which irritates the shit out of her of course, why this was not a wise approach to solving her issue.

[ - ] noonefromnowhere 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 22:12:27 ago (+0/-0)

Ok, it makes sense they'd prescribe it, it's similar to benadryl and it's used for itching as well as anxiety.

[ - ] nipo 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 20, 2022 02:34:06 ago (+0/-0)

It's used off-label as an anxiolytic for people who can't or shouldn't take benzodiazepines (like alcoholics). It is not a psych medicine nor is it a sedative. It's a 1st generation antihistamine, maybe a little stronger than Benadryl. It makes you drowsy like all drugs of this class. It's also a very good first line of treatment for someone presenting with non-specific itching.

Congrats on the baby.

Get her bile acids tested ASAP. That could be cholestasis.

[ - ] Fight_the_Lies 4 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 09:06:45 ago (+4/-0)

This is classic Cholestasis, exactly as it was with my wife. OP needs to go to the hospital for testing his wife now and find a new doctor ASAP. I sent him a PM with this info.

And for any other goats reading this, if your pregnant wife becomes itchy out of nowhere, this is VERY SERIOUS. Speaking from experience here. We learned about this with two pregnancies:

"In moms, the condition may temporarily affect the way the body absorbs fat. Poor absorption of fat could result in decreased levels of vitamin K-dependent factors involved with blood clotting."

Found this quote from your source interesting because it notes a link between poor absorption of vitamin k and poor absorption of fat. This would seem to indicate that fat is important to a diet in order to maintain vitamin k levels. And of course doctors for years told people not to eat fat for their heart. And we now know that vitamin k keeps calcium from sticking into your arteries instead makes it go to your bones so by telling people to avoid fat doctors basically insured that calcium built up in arteries. Pretty amazing. Nothing surprises me anymore.

Wait until you learn Linus Pauling was right and with just 3000-5000 milligrams of vitamin C a day, you can eliminate heart disease. All atherosclerosis is is a type of low-grade, long-lasting scurvy. When you don't have enough vit. C (which is a LOT more than they told us), the arteries of your heart (which undergo a lot of pressures) will be unable to repair themselves properly and will spackle tears with plaque instead of properly repairing. Over time, the spackle builds up and can break off and clog an artery that supplies blood to your heart muscle. Several studies now show that with more vitamin C, the endothelium increases in size. That makes no sense unless Pauling(2 time nobel winner many consider the father of modern chemistry) was right.

[ - ] ArnoBreker 2 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 11:50:50 ago (+2/-0)

Yeah, high-dosing Vitamin C can cure a ton of stuff. It can severely reduce opiate withdrawals and alcohol addiction, heal eczema, all sorts of interesting things.

[ - ] Centaurus 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 10:30:59 ago (+2/-2)

Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C. It is a component/co-factor of vitamin C.

[ - ] zr855 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 10:54:30 ago (+2/-1)

You keep thinking that and die of a heart attack just like my dentist who sold that Standard Process scam junk for years. Ascorbic acid IS vitamin C--PERIOD. It is the chemical manufactured in animals that make their own vitamin C internally.

You're pushing dangerous kike misinformation that can hurt people. https://vitamincfoundation.org/NaturalC.htm

[ - ] Centaurus -1 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 11:45:44 ago (+1/-2)

You are low hanging I.Q. fruit. Animals make their own ascorbic acid internally, and that is all THEY need. We do not make ascorbic acid internally because it is not vitamin C. Idiots like you are the ones hurting people. Do some research, fool.

p.s. eat as much ascorbic acid as your heart desires. Enjoy the acidic internal environment.

p.s.s. they did a study back in the 20s on people with scurvy. No matter how much ascorbic acid they were given, it would not cure the scurvy. But just one slice of an orange cured their scurvy, near instantaneously.

[ - ] zr855 2 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 11:54:17 ago (+2/-0)

Link to that study. Sorry Linus Pauling disagrees with you. I'll go with the nobel prize winner.

We do not make ascorbic acid internally because it is not vitamin C.

...yet we did further back in our evolution. Odd. Go observe mountain gorillas and other closely related animals that also don't make vitamin C. They eat a shit ton of foods containing ascorbic acid. We stopped making it because we got a ton from our diet.

Good luck with your heart attack. You'll be just like my dentist. You guys could be graveyard buddies.

That viewpoint was pushed by the Standard Process company so they could sell their bs pills. Many, many people fell for it.

[ - ] Ragnar 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 12:26:17 ago (+1/-1)

Correct. Also, the guy’s argument makes no sense when you think of what preindustrial societies would have done. They were not getting their factory made ascorbic acid pills. The only good way to get complex C is from fruits and some vegetables.

[ - ] zr855 1 point 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 15:23:37 ago (+1/-0)*

Holy christ, read the fucking links. Jesus. Ascorbic acid IS vitamin C--PERIOD. You guys are believing hocus pocus bullshit put out by a company called Standard Process. You have a choice, believe the nobel prize winning chemist considered the father of modern chemistry or some hogwash with no scientific basis but just "holistic" bullshit. Christ people are stupid.

https://vitamincfoundation.org/NaturalC.htm

when you think of what preindustrial societies would have done. They were not getting their factory made ascorbic acid pills.

Yeah and they were dying like crazy of scurvy and atherosclerosis. Do you think this is a modern occurrence? You can stave it off by eating a metric shit ton of ascorbic acid infused fruits and vegetables--mountain gorillas literally sit around all day eating a type of grass that contains a ton of ascorbic acid. You also would have to take in far fewer calories but you're talking about people that died on average in their early thirties...or you know...you can take 3000mgs (3 pills) of ascorbic acid a day and live into your 90s like Linus Pauling did--finally dying of cancer.

[ - ] Ragnar -2 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 16:39:43 ago (+0/-2)

Christ people are stupid.

Very anti-Christian of you

Yeah and they were dying like crazy of scurvy and atherosclerosis.

Scurvy only occurred in sailors with no access to fruits at sea. Heart disease was almost unheard of until what, the 1920s? Atherosclerosis in antiquity is supposedly found in Egyptian mummies according to some low carb maniac gurus. But even if true, they probably did have vitamin C deficiency as their diet was extremely high in grains.

I think we had this discussion earlier too and the link you sent (same here) is to a biased site. It has been scientifically shown the absorption of factory made ascorbic acid is shit compared to real complex C. Fruits, the best source of C, also come with lots of nutrients to help absorption of C. Saying take ascorbic acid and you will be healthy is like saying just take your vitamin D and never get any sun and you will be fine. Ever known a very healthy man who never sees the sun? The point is modern medicine is extremely prone to isolating individual factors and treating things in silos.

Why did Pauling get cancer if C is a panacea? This is a rhetorical question, of course, but ascorbic acid is not vitamin C.

She has a rash. So, not cholestasis, thank goodness.

Its more likely that she is dealing with PUPPP:

GO TO THE HOSPITAL NOW. NOT JOKING. LOGGED IN JUST TO SAY THIS. VERY SERIOUS! BABY COULD DIE:

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cholestasis-of-pregnancy/symptoms-causes/syc-20363257

This sounds like classic Cholestasis -- exactly like it was with my wife and child. The itching came out of nowhere and the doctor rushed here in for delivery because this could kill your child.

And sorry, but your doctor is a stupid shit and you need to get a new doctor! As soon as my wife's doctor heard she was a "little bit itchy" he freaked out and she went to the delivery room right then in there. This was about 10 years ago. She had blood work done after the fact and it was Cholestasis. This condition occurs during pregnancy and it can be very serious and dangerous for your child.

==================================
EDIT: More info from the linked article:
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, commonly known as cholestasis of pregnancy, is a liver condition that occurs in late pregnancy. The condition triggers intense itching, but without a rash. Itching usually occurs on the hands and feet but can also affect other parts of the body.

Cholestasis of pregnancy can make you extremely uncomfortable. But, more worrisome are the potential complications for you and your baby. Because of the risk of complications, your doctor may recommend early delivery.
==================================

Goats, if your pregnant wife suddenly becomes itchy, get her to the doctor right away. The baby could be at serious risk. Speaking from experience here.

Ok that's good to know. I'm no doctor, I just went through this ordeal with cholestasis and all the associated problems, and it all started with the wife being itchy. Might not hurt to have blood work done if you haven't already.

[ - ] Nosferatjew [op] 0 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 13:34:00 ago (+0/-0)

Tests will be performed, just to be safe, but so far we're fairly confident it is not cholestasis.

[ - ] Boardallday3 3 points 3.0 yearsMay 19, 2022 05:55:41 ago (+3/-0)

Probably dry skin. I've been getting itchy at night and when I wake up. I take showers earlier in the day now and use moisturizer which has helped. I found that applying the 'Speed Stik' type of deodorant to the annoyingly itchy area stops it right away. The green kind, not the dry white kind.

I broke my back a decade ago, which was obvious in the ex ray and even noted “fractured L-4 Pars”
, my doctor said I had nothing but common degeneration.
After 2 years of receiving no help and I had to figure out the broken back myself by getting all my records cause I still couldn’t return to work.
So when I made a stink about pain after 2 years, even my new doctor just prescribed me anti anxiety psych meds… “to change my mind about the pain”…
Actually had to teach multiple doctors that discs are capable of generating a protein that can cause pain. At least 3 doctors told me flat out the can’t.

Family general practitioners are not doctors, they’re glorified service technicians heavily paid and highly trained to offer you a Pharma solution stead of referring you to a real doctor, which are now called specialists.

Increase potassium intake. Get something called "lite salt" made by Morton salt at the grocery. 50% potassium and sodium chloride instead of all sodium chloride. Also take magnesium.
Also lots of vitamin d in case it's a immune system reaction.

These are just basic health things everyone should do and almost nobody does.

I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice.
