As an aside, I fucking hate the lefty meme that employers are responsible for their employees outside of the workplace. They claim to hate corporations but they desperately desperately want big daddy capitalism to take care of all that horrible "adulting" for them so they can focus on collecting funkopops and playing nintendo games. Oh it's totally jewy of amazon to promote low-income lifestyles to help keep their wages down, that's not my point though. My point is that the more we require employers to take responsibility for their employee's lifestyles the more they will have a say in those things.

The best situated person to make decisions about my healthcare, housing and other needs is me. It's my job to assess those needs, turn them into a dollar figure, then find an employer willing to cover that cost. Demanding that they do all that legwork for me is as ridiculous as a farmer turning up to a farmers' market and complaining the punters aren't paying him a living wage.

On a lesser note, as a general contractor in CA, you must provide cold drinking water and cups for the framers and such. When I was coming up in the trades, no one would carry your ass, you had to bring your own water and lunch. Now the boss has to haul around water and ice and buy cups that the mexishits use once and toss on the ground. Expensive water jugs, ice chests, etc. instead of getting lumber and rack of nails and Simpson stuff, you’re out getting ice and cups.

I also imagine that on a farm, you are driven out there, so it's not like you can quickly pop to the shops.

They just put up a new distribution center in the city that's closest to me. A large amount of housing is being built right nearby including apartment complexes. Not sure how nice they're going to be but I bet a bunch will have closet-sized units.
