If I understand correctly, racism was more the excuse for making MJ illegal. Racism was popular. The real reason was pressure from the paper, alcohol, and pharmaceutical industries.
Also, for these idiots, Mexican isn't a race. It's called marijuana, the Mexican word (although more commonly euphemisms are used like we'd say "weed"), because it came from Mexico. Most Mexicans are mestizo, which also isn't a race. And no one thinks that Hispanic or Latinx or whatever gay name we've come up with lately is a race. So it's not racism.

Cannabis is the whole plant; well technically a whole genus of plants, but I think there's only two extant species anyways. Marijuana is the dried flowers. I used to think it was a dirty word, but I don't really care any more.
If we're talking about "medical marijuana," cannabis is probably correct because a lot of people aren't smoking flowers. If we're talking about illegal or controlled substances, they probably don't care which part of the plant you have? Marijuana might be correct, there, however since that's what is trafficked.
This is good. I have been saying this for years. Marijuana is Mexican slang for cannabis. Calling it Marijuana is like calling beer cervesa. If you're speaking English, use the English word.
