When I first saw this, my reaction was that bridge building was complex and required a complex society in order to support the endeavor. You need mortar, stone, transportation and you need all of those with some ease of access.

Then I realized, complex society is brought about by intelligence.

Even when there is a societal collapse and knowledge of complex masonry is lost (as has happened in european history) whites still tend to rebuild bridges with alternative techniques, such as wooden arches. Those piers are still perfectly good and capable of supporting a fine wooden bridge.

This bridge was built by the Dutch around 400 years ago. It was destroyed in a war, I believe in the 1900s
