I meant to comment on ths yesterday. I really like these sort of posts.

Heres one I was looking at recently which has modern populations and their relation to the genomes of some ancient individuals from archeological finds. He nicely circles the major ancient population groups (except for western hunter gatherer— WHG, blue diamonds on the bottom left— which he omitted from some reason) We are a combination of these groups: ANE, WHG, EHG (which is just a mix of ANE and WHG) and Anatolian/EEF.

It was drawn from this one which has the labels of the relevant populations and shows the components of each group. https://indo-european.eu/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Wang-2018-Caucasus-admixture.jpg

why are fins and latvians same color as slavs? They are not the same haplogroup as anyone else.

the kievan rus was made up of russians, finns, and baltic people

the Kievan Rus was a slavic and nordic enterprise. The fins were a separate group that migrated westward through siberia, they have distinct haplogroup and distinct language which can be linked with korean.

it involved finns as well

Kievan Rus , First eastern Slavic state. It was founded by the Viking Oleg, ruler of Novgorod from c. 879, who seized Smolensk and Kiev (882), which became the capital of Kievan Rus. Extending his rule, Oleg united local Slavic and Finnish tribes, defeated the Khazars, and, in 911, arranged trade agreements with Constantinople.

also finns and russians are genetically similar according to this other european genetic map

One thing I have discovered is that Y haplogroup is not a reliable single indicator of genetic closeness. That is presumably because historically a small number of male invaders take over a regions and are highly polygamous. Then their hybrid male decendants have great reproductive success for a period, largely replacing male lineage but not overall autosomal dna.

Example latinos are descended from iberian dads and native american moms. They have haplogroup r1b so they must be aryans right? Obviously not. But even if you look at their iberian ancestors, those conquistadors were not particularly descended from steppe herder/yamnaya ancestry either. Iberians are heavily descended from early european farmer/neolithic anatolian stock. They are only patrilineally steppe herder. “Aryan” looking scandis are haplogroup I2. Northern indians have the same haplogroup as Russians and Poles. They usually call this a sex bias or something like that.

Europeans are all pulled from the same early subpopulations but in different proportions. North east europe is highly genetically related.
