They are still clipping but they call it INFLATION now.

Jews or no jews, the roman emperors made absolute trash of Rome's currency. Forget clipping, they were constantly diluting the silver content until the coins were essentially lead. Everyone was required to accept them from the government as if they were silver, but they weren't allowed to pay their taxes in trashcoins or even actual silver, taxes had to be paid in gold.

The result was that more and more people were forced to sell themselves into slavery to plutocrats in order to settle their tax debt. Even then the lesser taxes owed by craftsmen weren't payable, so they ended up having to pay in goods and services. Over time the state amped up those taxes too until tradesmen started fleeing because they just couldn't make enough free shoes to pay off the tax collectors. So in response the empire made trades hereditory and enacted punishments for leaving your trade.

Around that time tax collectors were having a harder and harder time coming up with the goods, so the imperial administration decided the wealthy civic leaders of each town/province would be responsible for levying the taxes, and if they couldn't get them from the burghers they had to pay them personally. People started fleeing towns to avoid being a tax collector and the imperials started assigning people to be tax collectors as a punishment for crimes.

By the time the barbarians started knocking at the gates they were being welcomed. Feudalist serfdom was a step up from Roman imperial citizenship.

It seriously disturbs me how many people glorify the Roman empire as a pinacle of civilisation. It was the USSR of the iron age. They did everything we take the piss out of venezuela for doing.
