Can you believe just 2 short weeks ago we were all talking about the Webb Space Telescope and now the Webb Space Telescope has reached L2 insertion!!??!!??

I'm very excited.

I tried L2 insertion with my girlfriend once. She was pretty mad.

haha that's an upvoat

Yeah, turns out it's not like in the pornos. Women don't like it when you stick it in the ear.

They have truly achieved a miracle getting that convoluted rig up the well and out to L2.

I guess those extra decades fiddling paid off

A reminder that the trade offs for this design are.

L2 was mandatory.
Meaning unstable orbit meaning limited mission life span due to constant fuel burns.
Meaning beyond manned spaceflight reach. No refueling. No repairs.

A potential flash in the pan mission.

Hope it pays off

L2 is where they have to park it to eliminate noise. They should have put it even further out.

I thought L2 was the super stable no movement zone?

I am too. Can't wait to see those amazing images!

i wonder why they're saying images won't be ready until this summer. That's a lot of waiting.

A shitty design.

They wanted the best.

That means 40kelvin temp they have to reduce the optics to.

Meh.

Humanity would of been better served by a 2.4m hubble in service 15 years ago.

You can't rush good (con) artists.

Lol the Webb telescope is 100% real bro

You can’t fake something like this

It's because they have to calibrate all the mirrors to micron level specs. It will probably take a year if not longer, in keeping with the Webb scope tradition of failed deadlines.

You think the "Webb Space" telescope was NAMED on purpose (Like they FOUND (or made up) a guy named webb or something?).

[ - ] Lordbananafist [op] 0 points 3.3 yearsJan 27, 2022 15:04:05 ago (+1/-1)

I thought the heat shield was made out of spider's webbs and that's where the name comes from.

The guy in charge of naming it has webbed fingers and just couldn't help himself.
