I know to schizos and they both self-medicate. The one crazy fucker made a hierarchy chart showing he was just below god and that Jesus reported to him. He posted them all over town. When it didn't get the following he desired he decided to burn a Bible on an intersection of main street. That move got the cops involved and he got to spend some time at the Nutjob Hotel. It was weirdly entertaining to watch him have conversations with whatever entities were plaguing him.

I'd have to read the study, which I'm not going to do right now. Proving causation in a psychiatric condition with an unknown etiology is a claim we should be suspicious of. Science journalism is at an all-time low. Schizophrenia is currently understood as a disease of neurobiological 'vulnerability', and probably involves an entire developmental series of interactions with the environment over years and years.

So, I'd wager that people who are likelier to develop schizophrenia are also the likeliest to be seeking out substances for self-medication. It just happens to be the case that marijuana is very popular for that function.

There is also data showing that schizophrenics have much higher rates of nicotine addiction.

In general you simply can't trust any "science" coming out now. The data collection methods, data handling methods, statistical methods, and so on are all suspect anymore. Lying to get what you want is standard practice in scientific communities now.

I think some people are more predisposed to schizophrenia or other mental disorders and marijuana can trigger full blown psychosis in the individual. Which means schizophrenia could have been delayed in their life or may have never appeared if they had not become a pothead.

Some people are more predisposed to cancer. It's very likely all genetic.

Same thing with cigarettes, there is mounting evidence for these claims as well by actual respected studies. The general idea is that the ritualistic and constant disruptions and pattern of use in combination with the substances causes impressions on a neurological level and change the behavior and thought patterns of the user. In this event it is the disruptions and patterns of thinking which manifests as a behavior disorder when it is a substance problem. I don't keep any friends that smoke weed because they are a waste of time

If anything it's the highly THC potent unnatural hybrids that have taken over the market that may be part of this relationship. I think it's more likely truly based in fantasy fiction culture if you haven't noticed the low key popularity of witchcraft, paganism and such being practiced by people who publicly claim to be "atheists". It doesn't matter if you believe in external entities getting into people's heads, all that matters is that they do.
