Smoking indoors is disgusting though, especially around other people eating. I don't mind it in bars with proper ventilation.
Can't agree more. I'm pretty old, and I started smoking a pipe at about 20 and occasionally cigars. I kept with it for decades until I got tired of messing with it all the time. I switched to cigars.
The difference in the smoke and the smell is enormous. People generally don't mind pipe smoke because it's more aromatic and it tends to remind them of an older family member, so it's sentimental. Cigars are just foul, and this is coming from a cigar smoker. However, I've always thought that as bad cigars are, cigarettes smell even worse. They just nasty in every regard.
I stopped smoking in the house and in the car about two decades ago and never regretted it. I just have to keep in mind how my clothes smell when I'm around people.
Pipe smoking was never very common, and smoking indoors was generally tolerated until about the late 80s. By the early 90s, the country became very self-righteous and demonized and punished smokers. All smokers were banished to remote smoking areas, often outdoors, which I thought was kind of harsh. For myself, since I tend to spend most of my time in the garage anyway, my smoking became exclusive to that location.
The fun for me was that when I was young (teens to mid-20s) alcohol would lower my inhibitions regarding talking to other people. But I never liked the taste of booze and only drank when around other people. As I got older, and more confident, my inhibitions diminished commensurately. It's been almost 20 years since I've drank any alcohol and I can pretty much walk up and talk to anybody. I was never a tobacco user.
I met a lot of cool people because I smoked and more than a few opportunities opened up because of my habit but at the end of the day I was a slave to cigarettes.
You can't understand unless you're a smoker. You're constantly thinking about when, where and if you can smoke. As soon as you enter a public building you start thinking about how long you're going to be there and IF there is somewhere you can sneak out to smoke.
Oh, and you NEVER leave the house without two full packs of cigarettes. You never know if you're going to be somewhere that you can't buy them. <<< see? that's what I mean. Smoking taught me how to prepare myself and to always be ready for the unexpected.
When I was a kid a lot of people smoked, but the smoke wasn't as obnoxious (or noxious) as it is today. Cigarettes are not the same as they were 40 years ago. You could be in a restaurant with a number of people smoking and you wouldn't really notice it. Your clothes did not stink from smoke afterward unlike today's jewsticks.
I also remember going hunting with my dad in the winter. He would smoke with the windows rolled up and it wouldn't bother me. Nowadays I can hardly talk to someone without choking up after they've come in from a smoke break.
Today's tobacco products are literally designed to kill you and anybody around you.
I smoke cigarettes, never indoors however. I started smoking almost 30 years ago, and I am resigned to my fate. Fuck it, life is short and smoking helps me not murder people.

Have you ever been to Hong Kong Airport? You can smell the smoking lounges near certain ventilation systems.
I used to smoke and used the rooms during a layover and it was foul. I was the only woman so it was pretty awkward but there was only ever a couple of people in the room.

The latest house we're in was owned by a chain smoker. Wiping carmel colored sticky shit from every square inch makes me truly despise cigarettes.
