Well what term do you think is a decent response to informally refer to a stranger? If there is a exchange of goods I could understand something like "sir". But just going about my day, if buddy or bud were used I can't see anything wrong with it.

Personally, I call people bud all the time. Its informal, and typically used to show that I want to be on comfortable speaking terms with the other party.

Could it be that a few folks used it sarcastically or with disdain towards you in the past, and now you associate as a personal attack?

In my language there is formal and informal way to address someone which often just makes plural instead of singular. Well, when someone finally called me guy face to face it felt like a step below informal. Like I am being insulted. Anyway, addressing you as "buddy" (friend) is a trick used to establish trust right off the bat. Whether the person is trustworthy or not is a different story. It establishes that "friendship" in your subconscious and gets them a foot in the door. It could be a malicious tactic, or even someone controlling who wants you to do a favor for a "buddy" and then further building on it.
