I don’t like vinyl. I like the hardy plank siding on houses though.

For music? Yes.

Any good finds lately? I am just getting into it?

[ - ] oldblo 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 16:48:44 ago (+0/-0)

Sorry. I like vinyl as in I prefer analog over digital and in general prefer old music over new music. Never really had my own collection unless you include free use of a relatives. Far as I know it can all be found digitally somewhere. If you search a decade such as 1940s along with online radio you can hear some old music right on the internet.

As for getting records your best bet is indeed used. Could be wrong but I think there is only one factory in the world that even produces vinyl records these days.

Besides I have weird tastes and can barely remember the names of anything I once enjoyed. If I were to say go listen to "I love the flower girl" I doubt many would be into it.

Cowsills....

[ - ] oldblo 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:28:27 ago (+0/-0)

Thats the one. Were you trying to convey something?

[ - ] spasswerk 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:40:52 ago (+1/-0)

It came out of nowhere and got stuck in my head a few months ago. I had to look it up.

I'm always trying to convey that we need to clean things up or our kids are fucked. No deeper meaning.

[ - ] oldblo 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:43:52 ago (+0/-0)

Didnt expect anyone to still hear it. Glad to know others like it.

[ - ] spasswerk 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:52:06 ago (+0/-0)

Not sure I even liked it. They played the piss out of it on the only station in town that wasn't country or jesus music. It had some good melody or it wouldn't have stuck I guess.

Now, what can we do to keep this awful ugha ugha shit from polluting our descendants' minds? I guess we can expose them subtly to good stuff.

I'm fucking old. I still have all of the albums I bought since the 60s, and I still play them, even though some records only last 15-20 minutes each side and need to be turned over and don't sound as brilliant as digital music. I don't fucking care. Vinyl has a live and vibrancy of its own, particularly with old jazz records from the 40s and 50s, and the "cleaned up" remastering of them I've heard also remove the "warmth" that vinyl brings.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 19:37:36 ago (+1/-0)

That sounds awesome, what are some of your go tos right now?

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 20:55:41 ago (+0/-0)

Mostly stuff that hasn't been remastered for CD. My early listening in the 70s was classical, especially medieval and renaissance, and English isle folk music, but not limited to that. One of my favorites is a brass performance of Gabrielli's antiphonal music. I have a few operas I particularly like, one "Carmen", and one "Le nozzi di Figaro" both with performers I consider the best I've heard. But I have some 70s albums I haven't been able to find. Ever heard of the The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver?

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:08:13 ago (+1/-0)

I haven't, I will check them out. I passed by a Carmen record last week, I picked up Bolero though, the one with Ravel playing the Moog on side B. Very cool.

Medieval and Renaissance sounds fun, I would like to get some of that. Also looking for Baltic pagan/folk records.

Which Carmen album? I will see if I can find it again.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:13:13 ago (+0/-0)

Holy shit. I think I have that one. I wasn't impressed with the Moog interpretation of Bolero at the time, but that was 40 years ago.

I'll regather tomorrow and look through my collection. I think the recording I have of Carmen was conducted by Solti. I don't have any Baltic music, but I'm a HUGE fan of Bulgarian and Romanian folk.

Do you remember an old record label called Caedmon? One of my favorites. I'll get a list of other labels that produced notable works I love.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 30, 2021 08:54:06 ago (+0/-0)

I can't find the album right now -- buried in literally ten boxes of records -- but I remember the cover. Is this it?

https://www.musicstack.com/album/andrew+kazdin/everything+you+always+wanted+to+hear+on+the+moog

The recording can be found on jewtube, but I wasn't going to post a link to that site.

Leonard Bernstein And Orchestre National De France / Andrew Kazdin And Thomas Z. Shepard - Ravel: Bolero

Url: https://www.discogs.com/Leonard-Bernstein-And-Orchestre-National-De-France-Andrew-Kazdin-And-Thomas-Z-Shepard-Ravel-Bolero/release/2392150

I have this, but would like to own what you posted as well.

I think the bolero recordings are the same across both records!

It looks like goats are enjoying this conversation, maybe I will create a subverse for this
We can all share our new finds... Too bad we are anon, or I would say swap, but I prefer my anon status over that hahaha

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 30, 2021 09:23:33 ago (+0/-0)

I think the bolero recordings are the same across both records!

It looks that way. I see the name Andrew Kazdin on both records, so I'm sure the Bolero on Moog is the same recording. I bought my album in 1977, and it was issued in 1973. I think the one you have is a reissue of just the Bolero. It's an interesting concept, contrasting the orchestral version with the electronic one.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 30, 2021 12:57:31 ago (+0/-0)

Yeah I like Walter Carlos switched on Bach, despite him being a demented old tranny bat at this point.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 30, 2021 13:53:18 ago (+0/-0)

Walter Carlos' electronic versions of classical music was, I think, the high point of this sort of thing in the 70s. There were others, notably Isao Tomita, who did some very beautiful and imaginative work, but I think Carlos did it best. That's not to diminish Tomita -- his version of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Stravinsky's "The Firebird" were both excellent.

But yeah, I agree with you on Carlos' tranny stuff ... makes it hard for me to appreciate his work knowing that he's mentally deranged.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 30, 2021 15:23:12 ago (+0/-0)

Wow awesome that you brought up Tomita. I just picked up "pictures" on vinyl for a buck on a whim. Saw the Moog on the back cover and took a chance, definitely liked it. But it is truly just alright, nothing fantastic for me.

But now I have you are what you is by Zappa spinning behind me, enjoying the work day. Hope you are too

My (wife's) dog ate my In Through The Out Door. Still in the original paper bag cover sleeve, so you couldn't see which cover it was. I was not pleased, to say the least.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 20:56:30 ago (+0/-0)

That album was good. The music was, well, okay, but the album cover was remarkable. I'd be very displeased too.

[ - ] cyclops1771 2 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 19:36:55 ago (+2/-0)

I have never left vinyl. I would record to cassettes from vinyl in the 80s. I did not get a CD player until 97 or 98, when they could be had for $19.

I switched to digital its portability around that time, but still would hit used record stores.

New finds: I found the first solo album by David Crosby. Surprisingly good. Amazingly good, even. Found a Doors Quadraphonically recorded album, but I have not set up my tuner for quadraphonic, so it's not anything special yet. Both were $2.50.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 19:39:37 ago (+1/-0)

The deals and steals are great. I found an old Chinese record at the flea market of a vocalist I like. Picked it up for a buck and when I looked online found it was going for $120.

Idk if my tuner can be set up for quadraphonic. What tuner do u have? What are your go to records to listen to right now?

[ - ] cyclops1771 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 19:51:56 ago (+1/-0)

I have an old 70s Kenwood tuner. Stainless steel and wood casing. Nothing digital, board still has capacitors and resistors. The matching turntable just got old - started playing at about 32 instead of 33 1/3 rpms. So it worked, but not all the way. Replaced the belt, figuring ti just got old, but it was the motor just turning 5% too slow.

The tuner has A and B speakers = 4 each. I had to get a newer turntable for the time being until I get a nice used one. It has to output via stereo output into old school amp input (like you would plug into your electric guitar.)

My older brother bought a house a few years ago, and the old owners left a 200+ vinyl collection and the turn table. I asked him for it, and he laughed, "Fuck you, it's mine!!!" He spent the first 3 months there alone while his kids finished school year in old town, and those albums became his only entertainment.

[ - ] Yargiyankooli [op] 1 point 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 20:55:12 ago (+1/-0)

Ah, my old denon can do quad then as well. I will need some more speakers though haha.

Do you feel the difference at 32? I feel as long as it is stable it should be fine no?

Any good records in the 200?

[ - ] cyclops1771 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:34:42 ago (+0/-0)

Everything sounds just a bit off/too slow. It's annoying enough to make it noticable and not enjoyable.

[ - ] cyclops1771 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:38:54 ago (+0/-0)

Any good records in the 200?

A lot of Elvis. Probably every Elvis album imaginable. A lot of early country, Hank Sr., Porter Wagoner type stuff, that gospely/yodely stuff. Early George Harrison solo stuff.

Brother said the Elvis was the best stuff.

[ - ] HughBriss 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:20:23 ago (+0/-0)*

Fuck, holy crap, I wish I had either a Kenwood or a Marantz tuner. The 70s was The Golden Age of Electronics. They're still working now, and producing brilliant, crystal sound. I couldn't afford any of that then, so I guess I'll have to buy one restored on eBay.

[ - ] cyclops1771 0 points 4.0 yearsJun 29, 2021 21:35:43 ago (+0/-0)

The reel to reel died, too, but I had no way of making or finding those in any realistic manner.

Vinyl albums are bound to go up in value in the long run. (unless, WW3.2), They definitely sound better. I can do side by side comparison of vinyl vs cd. Hi treble like cymbals and snare drum get lost in the digital sauce. You can't tell what you're hearing.
On vinyl, you hear all the nuance that's totally lost on cd 's.
If you have the wherewithall, to do a comparison, listen to the same cut on vinyl vs cd. You'll hear a distinct difference.
Prepare for war first , of course.

We sometimes wear it while listening to our old records.

A of them few going back as far as a couple of original Tom Lehrer albums, including a 10". Several 1950's jazz.

Let me suggest https://archive.org/details/lp_jazz-in-hollywood_hollywood-saxophone-quartet/disc1/01.02.+Nightcap.mp3 If you can find the original record it's a gem.

I love a good Japanese jazz album on vinyl.

Any suggestions? I would love to find some Japanese albums, but I am limiting myself to in person buys right now, so I will have to get lucky.

If you have any favorite artists, there is a chance they have released their albums on vinyl.
