Some surrendered Russian Army units marched to meet their supposed liberators with bands playing, while Nazi propaganda films showed Russian peasants cheering as the German troops paraded through their villages in flower strewn glory. After that however they were thrown into wired camps on the open steppe, where millions died during the cruel winter of 1941-42.

This actually mirrors the treatment German POWs had received after surrendering to US troops in 1945, whence fifteen million or so who had been left in open fields at the behest of General Eisenhower, who had rejected their status as POWs and had them reclassified as "enemy combatants," perished of exposure.
