How a Watch Works     (www.youtube.com)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rL0_vOw6eCc

This video from 1949 produced by the Hamilton Watch company (A heritage American watchmaker), uses a Hamilton 747 movement to instruct the audience on how an automatic wristwatch (or pocketwatch) works. Save for some improvements and complications by various manufacturers, the general engineering concept for a basic timepiece has been largely unchanged for 300 or so years. I am not very mechanically minded, but certainly the Mechanics, Engineers and Architects amongst you should be informed/entertained by this video.

Crystal and Dial looked OK, but I’m no expert. Bracelet and Clasp looked real cheap.

I Had To Turn Down a Rolex Today     (Wristwatches)

I got the call earlier today. I was on a waitlist for over a year for a watch in Rose Gold and Steel. With NYS Sales Tax, it would have cost me $17,850 and I just don’t have the money laying around. I had some medical stuff to take care of earlier this year and it entirely depleted my watch fund.

My old Authorized Dealer used to let me lay them away with 1/3 or 1/2 down and pay it off in like under 6 months and then pick it up, but the ADs in Manhattan have too many wealthy clients to be nickel and diming with some middle class guy from Queens. I was willing to put down $9K, but it was all or nothing with these guys. I’m absolutely not using credit or financing. Fuck that.

What is impressive about this particular guy is that he flips watches (kinda skeevy), but he has appreciation for them far beyond most people. He’s just a 24 or so year-old working class NYC Italian kid and he is already able to service and masterfully polish Rolexes and Pateks without ever having been to watchmaking school. He’s just a savant.

There are other channels where you can watch master watchmakers fully dissemble, clean and reassemble watches and it is almost serene to behold.

This is Austin in Japan. He knows 30x more about Rolex and watches in general than I do and this video really shows his unbridled passion and unrestrained autism. He is able to rattle off model numbers and features and how they have evolved for the entire history of the brand. It is similar to the guy who can rattle off all of the changed features of the different production years of Ford Mustangs and could tell you the year of every model simply by viewing a darkened silhouette. His love for the hobby is pure and he is not using his encyclopedic knowledge to fuck people over like a kikey 47th Street flipper, but just to gain further enjoyment and understanding. He's a guy with 2 kids and a wife and probably a relatively modest salary who is adding watches slowly to his collection and enjoying them. Guys like this can be a little scary, though, because they're real obsessive and idealistic purists who are put off by the slightest scratch, imperfection or polishing error, whereas a Philistine like me hardly knows shit comparatively and will walk around with scratches and an off-center index or a bezel that for whatever reason does not make the requisite noise when it rotates. Austin is very much like that as is J. Anthony,

I am considering several:

Grand Seiko Snowflake

Grand Seiko Genbi Valley

Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Sapphire Sandwich

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer

Tag Heuer Monaco Gulf Edition

Rolex Yachtmaster White Walker (actually a bit more at $12K)

Right now, I’m leaning towards the Omega World Timer, but I already have blue dial watches and I don’t like the shade of green they have for the other model.

Why I won't buy an Omega Seamaster or Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Worldtimer     (Wristwatches)

Lume. Why the fuck do they not fully lume the minute hand? I can't get past it. It's infuriating.

Even though I love the dial of the Worldtimer I can't pull the trigger. I need my lume. Might even do a Panarai. If I have $40K laying around, A. Lange Sohne has en entirely lumed watch that is also high horology. I'm probably getting another Yachtmaster or a Grand Seiko Hi Beat Snowflake. Might get the Omega Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich, though.

I bought this watch for myself and then gave it to my Dad probably 10 years before he died. Now I wear it a few times a year as a superstitious amulet when I have premonitions of trouble and also to honor my Dad.

Common quote you’ll hear/see:

“Rolex isn’t the best at anything, but they do a lot of things well.”

Yeah, well beat that Patek/Vacheron/AP/Omega.

Some watches may be rated for going deeper, but they probably would not be working after 5 years submerged with oxidation.

Meanspirited Reddit board dedicated mostly to prison-bound scammer Anthony Farrer aka "The Timepiece Gentleman." Funniest thing is when they found his profile on RentMasseur.com as gay-for-pay underworld tugboy "Travis Baker." The memes on this board are spicy and crazy and also make fun of other creeps and Jews in the watch re-selling industry like Roman Sharf, TraxNYC and Nico Leonard. Give it a try.
