One Week on the Lion Diet     (Health)

I’ve struggled to lose weight on many different diets. Did Carnivore for 18 months a few years back and the results were fairly lackluster. After much experimentation, I realized dairy was preventing me from losing any weight. I’m not fat but I’m not as lean as I would like considering how much effort I put into my health.

Anyway, so I commit to red meat and salt only. Absolutely no dairy. Not even heavy whipping cream in coffee or butter in my eggs. Holy crap, the withdrawal was immense. Which came as a shock because I was already on a very clean ketogenic diet. Lost 10 pounds of glycogen water weight within 3 days and have been dropping by about a pound per day. Appetite has diminished. I expect to have six pack abs by summer.

And the best part: after the withdrawal, it’s incredibly easy. Just eat beef. And my mind is so clear. I feel great. Calm. No negative thoughts. Just a consistently good mood and great sleep. You don’t count calories because you won’t overeat natural real food so the caloric intake is reduced naturally.

I have skirt steak on the smoker right now. Ice Monkey, you should try this diet.

Is depression really a "mental illness?"     (Health)

It occurred to me recently that a natural reaction to many current environmental, political, financial factors would be depression. Maybe in some cases even very serious depression. In fact, it would be a bit strange to NOT be depressed under most of these circumstances.

The depression itself would lead many to make changes in their lives. And despite assertions otherwise, I've yet to meet a depressed person who had "no reason" to be.

One reason I think the health care industry promotes this so hard is that depression may be a spiritual illness for some people. Missing the presence of God or even just hope in their lives.

Maybe there's is a version of depression that is a mental illness. But I think most of it is a natural reaction to life. And I think it does a disservice to depressed people to pile on them that they are also wrong and sick for feeling that way. I wonder if many people would be able to recover with the affirmation that their depression is valid.
