According to British historian Geoffrey Parker, climate change was the catalyst for global disaster in the 17th century. During that Little Ice Age, which lasted 80 years - it was about 2 degrees colder than in the eight centuries before - freezing cold, heavy storms, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and failed harvests ravaged the entire world. Due to lack of food, there were seven times more deaths than normal. Many people migrated to escape the food shortage (?). China and Japan used a more gruesome method to limit the number of hungry mouths: birth control by killing mainly girls.
