Simple pithy "rules" I've found effective:
Diet makes you thin, exercise makes you fit (that's a lot clearer than "diet & exercise")
Lift enough to damage your muscles (failure), sleep enough for them to repair (it only happens while sleeping)
When super sore the next day, do some more no matter how sore for quicker recovery (you have to burn off the lactic acid buildup)
Or maybe he was already being abused and this was a cry for help from a world that didn`t care about him. They were both in the child "care" system and ran away.
