Your math is off. A $50 I-bond purchased in 1998 would be worth $186.62. (Interest is compounded bianually)
Also it doesn't track actual inflation. Only tracks inflation based of the consumer price index. A more accurate way of measuring inflation would be to use the M2 supply. But the reason why the Fed won't use that, is because one they can manipulate the other they can't.
I would still encourage people to buy i-bonds, I have over 40k in them. I would also encourage people to buy silver! Very undervalued and I have well over 1k ounces in that.

I did something similar when I was in the Marines. We conducted a mock patrol and a house with hostages blew up. A leg flew out the window. We cleared what was left and started rendering aid to the casualties. It was literally a house full of blood and body part. Some actors had no arms or fake ones the spilled blood everywhere!(arterial blood loss) Honestly one of my most memorable moments from when I was in.
