This is no exaggeration or hyperbole. A cult of government worship is exactly what they are. Their seemingly irrational behaviors and narratives become consistent and predictable when viewed this way:
The government is their god, the experts are their priesthood, the media are their prophets, and they have turned schools into their churches.
Like any religion, they have both radical believers and moderates, and everything in between. There are core doctrines, which must never be questioned by anyone. The radicals see to it, using violence and intimidation and ritual shaming. The moderates do damage control and run cover for them, along with occasional hand-wringing and pearl-clutching, but don't dare step out of line. The flock pushes ever onward, towards that utopia of true belief, which stays forever just out of reach.
The Government makes no mistakes. Anyone who claims otherwise is a hillbilly, uneducated, brainwashed fool. Just listen to the experts! It's so easy!
The Government can do no evil. Anyone who questions this wears tinfoil hats and is a conspiracy theorist. Haven't you heard what the media said? Ignorant!
The Government is all-powerful. It can fix all our problems, cure all disease, and keep everyone safe. We just have to believe. And obey. And pay.
If ever it looks like the Government did something wrong, it's not the Government's fault. It's because heretic experts have infiltrated the priesthood. It's because of blasphemous politicians among the clergy. It's because the false prophets are spreading disinformation through fake news. We must punish and purge them. Purge them all. Then the Government will be perfect and pure again.
If ever there are problems the Government hasn't solved, it's not the Government's fault. It's because our very existence is corrupt and taints the environment. It's because we haven't atoned for the original sin of racism that we were born with. It's because we haven't paid enough taxes as penance. Most of all, it's because of all the blasphemers and unbelievers! If only they didn't question, if only they believed, then no problems would ever exist. We must punish and purge them. Purge them all. The Government's will be done.
If only we all trust the experts hard enough, and always obey and do as we're told without question, and give up all of our rights and freedoms, and hand over everything we earn, and surrender ourselves to their mercy... then, and only then, the Government will reward us. By making it so that nobody ever gets sick. And nobody ever hurts anyone. And nobody ever dies. And nobody is ever hungry or sad. And nobody has to work. And everyone has everything. And everyone is always happy. And the weather is always nice. And it's never too hot or too cold. And nothing ever changes. Forever and ever.
This is what they actually believe.
A fully-fledged religion. Complete with deadly sins, origin myths, promises of paradise, flawless saints, and holidays to celebrate it all.
You may find it ironic, that people who constantly trash talk religion are in fact members of one of the largest and most radical religions. But is it really that surprising or unusual, that members of a religion attack and ridicule all other religions, and even try to wipe them out? Like all self-righteous followers, they believe theirs is the best one, and everyone else is wrong, and must be converted for their own good. Or else.
You can use their hatred of religion against them though. By pointing out all these parallels. Pisses them off to no end. Might even rattle a few of them out of it.
