I ran into a grizzly bear this morning while walking dog in Swan Mountains.

submitted by GuyWhite to whatever 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:12:36 ago (+36/-1)     (whatever)

I was walking my dog this morning on Forest Service land in Montana’s Rocky Mountains. Dog and I met a grizzly bear. Everything turned out OK.

Dog and I are walking down a dirt road when I see the bear. It was about175 feet away in the middle of the road. It was looking at us. A grizzly. It had a hump in its upper back Dog had not detected it yet and did not put up a harangue.

I don’t have pictures. I was too busy preparing to do battle. I drew the dog close. And pulled the bear spray canister out of my coat. My eye was still on the bear.

So I turn around and started WALKING (not running) away from the bear with dog in hand
(we look like a bigger opponent when together.)

My torso was turned when walking away so I could watch the bear. Bear took a few steps towards us. Then bear stopped and went up on its hind legs to get a better look.

Dog and I kept walking away. After about 10 seconds, the bear went down in all 4s and bolted in the other direction…away from us.

I watched my back all the way back to the truck! 🤠

Wouldn't carrying a 10mm make sense?

[ - ] Ragnar 4 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:54:38 ago (+4/-0)

My friend was camping in bear country and got attacked. He shot the bear but he still lunged at him. Best to avoid these encounters all together

I second. Avoid it first step.

A phase plasma rifle in 40 watt range would make the most sense but some states don’t allow them.

I hate that they were able to skirt the 2nd amendment by arguing that energy weapons aren't firearms. It says "keep and bear arms" not "keep and bear firearms". That argument should of never worked, but here we are in clown world.

Once again it was the jews.

Funny how they'll argue that "the founding fathers never envisioned people inventing assault weapons!" on the one hand, while skipping right past the fact that any well dressed gentleman of the period wouldn't think of leaving the house without a sword. Which is also "not a firearm".

And who is it that decides that men who founded a country on the word of God, that if alive today and came across a tranny they'd kill it on the spot to rid their society of evil?

They don't sound like men that would bend over and grab their ankles to be fucked by a degenerate troon just because some Numxle develops PTSD from the site of a weapon of self defense against those that wish to impose tyranny on We The People.

Be 💯% of yourself not 50% of clubbah.

The imitation is flattering though.

wtf is a phase plasma rifle.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 1 point 3 weeksMay 18, 2024 20:11:21 ago (+1/-0)

Phased plasma rifles (in the 40 watt range) are Skynet's weapon of choice. It's a common joke in gun stores to ask if they have one in stock. If you're on friendly terms with the staff or the guy doesn't have a stick up his ass, the proper response is "hey, just what you see pal".

Likewise, if they have an Uzi hanging on the wall, you nod toward it and say "oozee nein millametah".

40 watt range lol.
Not even a light bulb.

Still makes my inner nerd laugh 40 years later

[ - ] Crackinjokes 1 point 3 weeksMay 19, 2024 10:29:42 ago (+1/-0)

That amount of power stored in a capacitor and expressed in a millisecond is a lot of power.

Like A 40 lb bow.

[ - ] Belfuro 0 points 3 weeksMay 20, 2024 16:23:12 ago (+0/-0)

I get that.
But a 40watt arrow launch to the chest will kill you.

40 watt laser?

Is Efficiency at work here?

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 2 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:57:21 ago (+2/-0)

Yes. With a full magazine would be better. I don’t have one. But the bear spray is very effective..

[ - ] drstrangergov 0 points 3 weeksMay 18, 2024 19:32:00 ago (+0/-0)

no. thatd just piss a grizzly off

[ - ] Rowdybme 1 point 3 weeksMay 20, 2024 00:42:14 ago (+1/-0)

I'm surprised you didn't refer to the bear as a kike

[ - ] TheBigGuyFromQueens 3 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:19:10 ago (+3/-0)

entrails or it didn't happen.

[ - ] Localuser 2 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 17:19:42 ago (+2/-0)

Oh shit! Surprised the dog didn’t do anything. I would’ve been worried he would rile him up

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 1 point 3 weeksMay 19, 2024 10:10:33 ago (+1/-0)

Dog never detected the bear. I turned that dog around fast and started walking away. Dog never knew. If that bear had started charging, I would have turned her around again. A dog harangue and my harangue may stop a charging bear….but I doubt it.

[ - ] xmasskull 2 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:03:56 ago (+2/-0)

A successful bear"encounter"you'll be able to tell your Grand-kids about.

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 1 point 3 weeksMay 19, 2024 13:03:05 ago (+1/-0)

They’re disappointed they didn’t get my inheritance. Sorry kids. Maybe next time.

[ - ] gardella 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 16:58:25 ago (+1/-0)

damn never seen a grizzly, met many black bears on deer hunting trips, they barely register me as the have always gone quietly on their way and me in mine.

[ - ] dulcima 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 16:47:56 ago (+1/-0)

Never seen a bear in the wild. I would have been terrified.

[ - ] Ragnar 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:52:39 ago (+1/-0)

Last summer, I was near that area but ran into a black bear cub. I didn’t even have a second to find it cute because my first thought was mama bear is bound to be super close. So I bring my family tightly together and we start moving away while I keep an eye out for the mama bear. We reached our car quickly and bolted.
I know black bears are less aggressive but I also know mama bears can get crazy if they perceive any threat to their baby

[ - ] glooper 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:23:39 ago (+1/-0)

I know black bears are less aggressive.
----------------------------------
Actually that is not remotely true. More attacks and deaths by blackbear...by a LARGE margin.

[ - ] KangzNSheeit 3 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:33:22 ago (+4/-1)

That's because there's more of them and they run into humans more often. They are less aggressive.

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 19:04:25 ago (+1/-0)

Bear spray canister when you should have pulled a .357 Magnum shows you were unprepared to safely be in your location in the first place.

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 3 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 14:03:53 ago (+3/-0)

No. Both are effective. The professional guides around here pack larger and more powerful caliber handguns than a 357. Or they use bear spray which is very effective.

Bear spray canister when you should have pulled a .357 Magnum shows you were unprepared to safely be in your location in the first place.

You sure as fuck ain't either. A pistol for a bear? Shotgun.

[ - ] FuckShitJesus 0 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:44:42 ago (+0/-0)

.357 is what almost all hunters carry in bear country.

[ - ] chrimony 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:52:32 ago (+1/-0)

Probably for convenience. But you need a well-placed shot on a charging bear for it to work. The shotgun is more effective.

[ - ] s23erdctfvyg 0 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 19:00:23 ago (+0/-0)

Going to agree with you here. 44 magnum at a minimum for pistol defense, but any of the super magnums are preferable. 308 and 30-06 are going to be what is recommended as a minimum for hunting grizzlies, as such around that energy 2,800-3,000 is the what your self defense weapon should be for dealing with bears.

Are you near Waterton Lakes?

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 0 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 16:39:19 ago (+0/-0)

No. I was about 1/2 mile from the Bob Marshall wilderness. And I live not much further away from the wilderness. The critters that come out of the woods!

[ - ] yesiknow 0 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 15:13:01 ago (+0/-0)

I cam across three mangy bears when I was walking in a suburban cul de sac with no way out but through winding streets. It was very uncomfortable.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:46:09 ago (+0/-0)

'Don't feed the bears' isn't just the law, it's a good idea.

That must have been exciting. Does the bear spray usually work?

[ - ] Ragnar 3 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:53:09 ago (+3/-0)

It works till it doesn’t hahahahaha

[ - ] GuyWhite [op] 3 points 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 13:59:58 ago (+3/-0)

Yes it works. The canisters have expiration dates. So you get to practice when you canister expires.

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 4 weeksMay 18, 2024 14:10:09 ago (+1/-0)

Good info. Turns out my pepper gel is expired, so now I can practice in a casual setting.
