What advice would you give to a new freelancer

submitted by Isaacjan to AskUpgoat 1.3 yearsFeb 22, 2023 18:13:05 ago (+2/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

Starting my own freelance software dev thing. I'm aware of having tight contracts and getting 50% upfront, anyone else have relevant experience with some advice for a brand new freelancer?

You're not getting 50% up front if you're new at it. In fact, you're probably not getting hired. Go work for a firm for 5 years first, ship a product, then try it.

Don't try to do business in Los Angeles.

Practice saying 'would you like fries with that, Sir?'

Get out and into a better industry before the frustration of software development steals your soul.

If you can't use your ability to start your own business, you'll always be slaving for a paycheck while someone else uses your ability to make a lot more money than you.

No need for a "better industry" this person just needs actual cred working at a company for a bit. Trying to do this without verifiable results will be a disaster. All apps that can exist are written already. So don't think that will help. Unless you're working on ML or something on that level, most software can nearly write itself now, GPT will handle simple coding tasks, complex ones will be handled by people that don't ask these questions, but are already established, and most likely better than you.

Sales may be your thing.

No need for a "better industry"

Software is cutthroat and lacks any real conforming to standards.

this person just needs actual cred working at a company for a bit.

This is no longer true or relevant. Decentralized technologies now allow for development and credibility without working for a slave labor cube farm.

Trying to do this without verifiable results will be a disaster.

The sooner one jumps out on their own and takes the high risks, the sooner one learns from their mistakes and earns the high rewards. This is true for almost everything in life.

Unless you're working on ML or something on that level, most software can nearly write itself now, GPT will handle simple coding tasks, complex ones will be handled by people that don't ask these questions, but are already established, and most likely better than you.

I agree. This is specifically why I said to find a better industry.

Sales may be your thing.

Not really following here. Was this for the OP? Possibly, I guess? Context needed.

As a client for programmers, and as someone that has hired them. Decentralization means shit. Meaningless. No credibility. It shows me you're willing to give away money at best, that you're an idiot at worst. What are you going to create that is decentralized that does not already exist? Why should I be interested? What can you code that will make me money, and what have you coded that made anyone else money, including yourself? You can sit there and learn from mistakes, but that won't get you hired as an independent. You HAVE to have made something profitable. If you can't then you can try an app, but everything has been done with those. Yes that was for the OP, are you incapable of picking up on context clues?

Ahh. I thought we were going to have an intellectual conversation. Your close-minnded responses suggest you lack the intelligence to proceed.

I'm trying, you're free to rebut my points. Or just call me closed-minded. As someone that HIRES programmers I am simply stating what is being looked for. Please rebut to the things I said, I'll help you get started, "I see what you're saying but I have seen that..."

What's the point? We've already started from a position where you've demonstrated your handicap.

Sure, I could say things like "I hire the people that hire people like you to hire people like the OP", but do we really need to play the game where we try to measure penis size when you've already made it clear you sit middle to low on the totem pole? Because you are on the low end of the achievement spectrum, of course you're going to give advice based on the limits of what you've obtained. How could anyone blame you?

The disappointment is that I expected you to be able to at least try to comprehend the position of those who hire those who hire you.

Can you?

[ - ] ghetto_shitlord 1 point 1.3 yearsFeb 22, 2023 19:34:32 ago (+1/-0)

You have failed to rebut any of my points. Just say where I am wrong and why. Is that hard? I started and now consult for a cooperative IT company. I live on a sailboat with 2 20 something women, I'm 44 and retired. How is that sitting mid to low on your proverbial totem pole? Low achievement? Where are you and what age?

Just answer.

I hope, in this fantasy of yours, that your daughters are at least capable of working for themselves after your net worth has vaporized because you were living in the past.

Decentralization means shit.

Decentralization means opportunity.

It shows me you're willing to give away money at best, that you're an idiot at worst.

You demonstrate your ignorance to how swiftly the Amazon, Azure, & Google data center models are becoming obsolete. This makes sense, if you're retired.

You can sit there and learn from mistakes, but that won't get you hired as an independent.

The very fact that every single day a developer somewhere in the world innovates in a way that is novel and creates new things negates this hyperbolic absolute.

My argument is that these people can be entrepreneurial and nothing is stopping them.

You HAVE to have made something profitable.

Word salad.

If you can't then you can try an app, but everything has been done with those.

Pretending everything that can be created, has already been created, is laughable.

There is too much posture in what you wrote to give a response, because you will just continue to posture and make up stories of your greatness.

I repeat - what's the point?

What industries would you suggest?

[ - ] FuckShitJesus -1 points 1.3 yearsFeb 22, 2023 18:54:09 ago (+0/-1)

Whatever industry allows you to benefit from the productivity of your own labor, instead of working to make others rich.
