I had an early AMT Hardballer. Shot some IPSC matches with it.
Warning:
One thing you will discover early on is that you'll need to lube all of the stainless-on-stainless wear points and areas, like the frame and slide rails with a lithium sulfide type grease to prevent galling.
The TW25 ("camel cum") that we use on the Mk-19 works well.

BTW, a Sig Sauer P220 X-6 will kick it's ass and doesn't care what ammo you feed it. Shit, now I want one of the AMT's. Lust, not a good thing. I have a .22 with @ 8" barrel from Browning that I love shooting. Especially after I outshot a marine buddy who showed up with a .22 rifle.

You can get an AMT. I think the last time I looked they ran about $1k. With that huge barrel though it ought to be powerful and accurate.
