The second half is a socialist screed, but the first half of the Road to Wigan Pier by Orwell is a great account of the lives these people lived back in the day. Tough life, but admirable men.

Ppl are fond of decrying child labor for all sorts of reasons .. you all should remember that coal mining is a highly lucrative endeavor, these yung'uns received cash money for their labor .. you see them now dirty and covered in coal dust from the mines, however after work when liberty and freedom is glorified these dudes were the "big spenders" of their day, "swells" down the pub or at the horse races .. I would go so far as to say they were in a far more enviable position than their less fortunate peers, who labored under brutal taskmasters in the Brit Public School system.

Those that managed to survive, "retired" with significant injuries, and got out before "Black Lung" got them.

Coal mining in the 1800's - 1940's was fucking brutal work, and it was done in medieval conditions.

"Black Lung."

Coal miners are not the only ones to experience work related health problems, whereas the latest from Occupational Health specialists is, "if your work is making you sick, get a new job," some do and avoid illness, some accustomed to high wages as tradesmen or as coal miners don't ..

As well a great many "maidens" seeking a hard working, well paid husband would be attracted to such men .. brings to mind a story of 20th Century miners in Wales, that related families where the father and a couple of kids all worked in the mines, all of whom brought money into the family coffers each week were very well off indeed.

Wage slavery appears to still be the default choice.
