I used to do that when I was a kid, but with water and sodium carbide. I would have never wasted candy or cola as a kid, we didn't have money.

Made a few of those, I would drop a piece in an almost full bottle, cap it then walk away. It would blow up minutes later spraying white water everywhere. At 9 years old I was smarter than this sheboon.

We did it with muriatic acid and tinfoil. My dad would get pissed because it would kill the grass in a 30ft radius. I had one go off in my hand once but I was right next to the pool and the blast knocked me in immediately. That was the last time I made one. We also used to mix draino and tinfoil in a coke bottle and put a balloon on top. The balloon would fill up, so we'd tie it off and tie a string to it. That mix made hydrogen, which is lighter than air and would float like helium. You light the string and let it go you get a nice fireball 20' in the air.

I used drain cleaner and bleach. For some reason the kid who taught me how to do it had me convinced you needed to put some aluminum foil balls in too, but I don't think you do. A good shake, a granny style free-throw and run the other way. Simpler times.
