It's undeniable that politicians have resorted to using kayfabe which is wrestlers staying in character and acting that they truly hate they're opponent.

Musk's political activities drew a lot of heat on Tesla and damaged the business. You remember the organized Tesla burnings, right? He's the CEO of a public company and if he doesn't want to get fired by the board he has to fix this. The game is to publicly split with Trump in a believable way so he can shed the political baggage of his four-month Project Manager gig at the WH.

He's also hinted at making a "new political party" or something like it. Trump et al would love nothing more than to primary a number of entrenched GOP congresspeople. If Musk is credibly seen as an opponent to Trump and engages in this action it doesn't blow-back on Trump directly.

The way to determine if something is real is to ask "who benefits?" Thus far everything put out there benefits Musk and Trump, which is all you should need to know. The real impetus is the issues with Tesla, where Musk is subject to a lot of oversight being a public company.
