I like never having to tinker with my computer to try to get it to work.

[ - ] Not_C 0 points 2 daysJun 5, 2025 01:36:20 ago (+0/-0)

99% of people use their computer to run their internet browser, and that's it.
So yeah, 99% of people can switch to Linux without any issues whatsoever.

As for everything else -
20 years ago you would have to tinker with Linux to get everything working properly.
Now, there's no tinkering, no terminal use.
Now Linux is simple, automatic, and idiot proof.

Terminal for life, nigger.

[ - ] Thedancingsousa 0 points 2 daysJun 5, 2025 08:48:41 ago (+0/-0)

I wouldn't say no terminal use. But there is a ton of info online with accurate copy pasta for anything you want to do and AI.

There has never been a time to be less afraid of the terminal.

Use the terminal at least a little on day 1 just to get over any fear about it.

But yep, Linux is as simple as you want it to be. It's only hard if you want to do hard things. In fact it's easier than windows for hard things which is why developers use Linux. Window's difficulty curve starts off easy but if you want to do anything hard it gets really hard. You are going to need some certs. Linux actually has a lower slope learning curve and a starting base that's a tiny bit higher than Windows.

Ubuntu

He should just stick with Windows if his choice is the most globohomo Linux distro

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 0 points 2 daysJun 5, 2025 02:48:23 ago (+0/-0)

Yes, gatekeep him. Gatekeep him harder.

[ - ] Kozel 2 points 2 daysJun 5, 2025 02:52:44 ago (+2/-0)

White men should not use Oobantu

Ubuntu describes a set of closely related Bantu African-origin value systems that emphasize the interconnectedness of individuals with their surrounding societal and physical worlds.

literal nigger OS

Wanting him to have a good first experience is not gatekeeping.

It took me a lot longer to become comfortable with Linux than a week. What really helps when switching is to have a second machine so you can try it as much or as little as you want for the day but not be stuck interrupting your productive work on your familiar machine. A second monitor is good when troubleshooting it and looking up help on your main PC. You can slowly improve it until it's ready to switch over to smoothly.

The people recommending Linux often have a multitude of computers at their disposal. Often because they work in the IT field or just because its their hobby. It is easy to forget that most people have just the one computer that they own and rely on.

I am guilty of this assumption myself.

Just like learning a new language, immersion is the best method to become comfortable the quickest possible.

[ - ] Kozel 1 point 2 daysJun 5, 2025 02:13:34 ago (+1/-0)

Ubuntu is gay and shit

If you want a corpohomo linux then go with Fedora

If you want a proper autistic linux look at nosystemd.org

Forget Ubuntu. Go straight to Artix. There is this perception an arch based linux is harder but it's just not true. People with experience actually migrate to easier systems because it wastes less of their time.

Ubuntu keeps all of their software locked in the past. Well half of it. The problem is when you want to install something beyond the repository and you can't get Ubuntu's software to versions that are compatible, so you end up compiling an entire dependency tree only to find it keeps going deeper and deeper.

Or you can just use Artix (arch based) and everything is as new as now. Turns out most developers target for compatibility also with now instead of 10 years ago, so everything just works. Also the base repo for it is absolutely huge compared to Ubuntu and then the AUR on top of that has almost every software anyone has ever wanted to install on Linux. So you can always use a repo and always have the newest software.

See, easier. Experienced people use Arch because experienced people know what's easier and that holding packages in stable 10 years stale is bullshit. You are more likely to have something break having to work around that bullshit.

Then Artix is +1 better over Arch because its the same thing but no systemd.

For a very long time until recently I've used Artix for personal and Ubuntu for server. But I'm now done with Ubuntu for server. Just today I needing to install a npm package and g++ was complaining. On Ubuntu it's on version 9. On arch it's on version 15. You do the math. I can't even get a modern c++ compiler on Ubuntu that NPM assumes anyone should have access to. What would honestly break if Ubuntu let people compile modern c++?

I'm not some consooom newest software fiend but it's just ridiculous and it wastes time. I would buy the "older is more stable" myth and had when I was younger, but I also just have years of experience running 100% of my software within a month of any developer's edits and nothing breaks. It's shocking but it's true. Far less than Ubuntu. To the point that I'm investing significant time right now porting a lot of servers just because I know it will save time in the long run to never deal with version hell ever again.

If getting reasonably dated software to run on Ubuntu is hell for even an experienced person like myself to the point that I'm willing to put in a lot of work to avoid it, imagine how hard it will be for you?

Experienced people and beginners should be on the same distros because both are interested in things breaking less and avoiding time sucks. Experienced people move away from Ubuntu to Arch not because it's harder and they can but because it's easier.

Unless you're a slave to certain specific corporate software programs that are usually designed to exclude non-windows you should barely even notice the switch after you get used to a couple of new names for programs.

[ - ] MrPancake 4 points 2 daysJun 4, 2025 15:30:54 ago (+4/-0)

Well; he will notice an extra 3-4 gigs of ram free and faster load times (oh wait, not in Ubuntu; thanks SNAP)

Only thing you can't run in linux is a handful of anti-cheat games and maybe some similar tethered licensed professional apps. There are multiple ways to run on linux directly, actual ports, several wrappers: dxvk, vxd3d, dxwrapper, dgvoodoo2, .., wine, and then running windows in a vm if need be. Old windows games actually run with less bugs and faster with dxvk, dgvoodo2, & dxwrapper than directly on windows 10 & 11.
