Honestly, Tim Curry's performance in "Legend" (1985) is hands down the best in costume performance of the Devil I've ever seen.

The only devil I'm aware of De Niro ever playing was in Angel Heart (1987), which was actually a very good performance.

Another great actor that played the devil which comes to mind is Ray Milland in "Alias Nick Beal", a Faustian noir movie. Good one too. I'm sure there's been a lot of great actors who have played Mr. Scratch in the past we could think of.

Angel Heart (1987). Not aware of any other devil role he played. Actually a very good neo noir, and worth watching if you can find it. Although they did take some liberties from the book (Falling Angel) which I didn't care for.

Give it a shot if you get a chance. Mickey Rourke (pre-plastic surgery) stars in it, along with DeNiro. You can find it on Putlocker, Bitchute, and other streaming services.

I've never been a big fan of noir or films set against that folksy Louisiana deep-south voodoo stuff. This film is both, but I would say it is worth watching. It's sort of campy. They were not subtle with the connection between Deniro's character and the devil. But pre-disaster Mickey Rourke makes it worth it.

I've always been a YUGE noir fan, but that folksy deep-south voodoo stuff in the movie was also another liberty from book which I didn't like. In the book, they never left NYC, no voodoo associations (Santiera), no spooky kid. The book is much more hard boiled detective mystery that slowly turns into a horror novel. Now, I do like the movie, I think it works on a different level and I wish it would have stayed closer to the book.

So, I didn't realize there was a book. I will have to check that out. I am currently re-reading The Club Dumas, which my favorite occult/satan movie (The Ninth Gate) is based on. If you (or anybody else) haven't seen that, I would check it out. I actually find Depp's character to be a really good "human proxy" of the devil: subdued, practical, cynical, and ambitious. Most depictions of the devil usually make him an evangelist, a Karen who is trying to spoil God's project. I think it is interesting to see the devil as a lone wolf, someone who cares about a very small number of people, and always instrumentally.

It's also a noir film. You can ignore that it's a Polanski project. Talent is talent.

It has some trashy moments in it yes. That's one of the liberties from the book I didn't care for. Still worth a watch, IMO.

I like how The Devil's Advocate toyed with Pacino's character. All of the pomp starts to make him campy too, and then they'll just slide in the subway scene, where Pacino gets serious and it's super dark. The contrast has a really good effect, like, oh, so it's all fun...until it isn't. And I liked the way they made Pacino's satan self-conscious of this - he makes it explicit in the movie ("they never see me coming").
