Last time I checked gender describes a form of mental illness. Specifically a mismatch of the mind with the body to various degrees. Essentially your body has a sex and your mind has a gender. If you are normal your sex and your gender are identical, but if you are mentally ill your gender does not closely match your sex.

Gender only has meaning in a linguistic sense. In many European languages, nouns are either a masculine, feminine, or neuter. That is their gender. For example, in French a chair is feminine, thus is uses the article "la" or "une". It's nonsense to say that in French a chair has a female gender because "male" and "female" only relate to biology in a sexual context.
