So goddamn spooky. What does it all mean?

Crystal Field Theory (CFT) is a bonding model that explains the electronic structure and properties of transition metal complexes. It assumes that metal-ligand interactions are purely electrostatic, treating ligands as point charges that create an electric field around the central metal ion. This field splits the degenerate d-orbitals of the metal ion, leading to changes in energy levels, color, and magnetic properties of the complex.

Where CFT fails is in explaining why some ligands have strong fields and some have weak fields.

I thought you were a Nurseryman (ret.)!

More of a plantsman technologist and researcher specializing in environmental chamber plant production. But I did have an outdoor hobby bamboo nursery for 10 years or so. Still have around 200 square feet of outdoor growing space with hot peppers, mints, herbs, and some other plants. One of my faves is a 9 foot San Pedro cactus I've been growing in a 3 gallon pot for about 22 years.
