I recently looked into Madeleine's disappearence again and realized that the carefully curated media circus might not have been designed to throw off the investigation at all (you don't really need media attention for mere obfuscation).

For everyone who doesn't remember the details: the parents are definitely in on it and many people believe they killed her either directly or negligently. Instead it could have been a genuine attempt to communicate with an actual abductor.

The parents are obviously well connected to the British deep state that much is clear. Keeping that in mind the rumours of involvement of celebrity tier child predators like the Podestas or Eppstein/Maxwell don't seem all that crazy.

Now if some high status untouchable takes your child (or maybe doesn't give it back like agreed upon) and you have still hope to get your kid back you might settle on a strategy of trying to fuel wild speculation to keep the case in the news even at the risk of exposing your own criminal action. At least that would explain a lot of the parents' awkwardness.
