I believe we should all live up to our abilities. For those that can walk outside of the music, we should. For those that can't, there is no expectation for them to achieve what they are incapable of.
That said, there is a battle to ensure that the music is right. To ensure that those that are incapable are not given more power and control than they would be rightly due.
In the relationship between a parent and child, the parent should be calling the shots or at the very least providing an appropriate framework for the child's decisions to be implemented. We can't live on icecream and play at the park all night.
The more mature and capable a child is, the less rigorous and restrictive the framework needs to be. Someone with obvious and extreme deficiencies would be like a young child. To follow this metaphor, the more dangerous circumstance is the intellectual capacity of teenagers, where recklessness and the ability to make proper decisions coexist. Maybe these ones are on the verge of blooming into fully mature adults, or maybe they destined to be a forever teenager, still relying on the music to guide them.
And we should also self-reflect. Are we always and truly free of the music ourselves? Or do we lapse back into patterns at times?

I remember criticisms of Ender's Game (the book), where people felt it wasn't a realistic depiction of a young boy's mind. Many people can relate that in their youth they did think in that capacity.
From my personal experience, I passed the driving school exam by using only logic, never studied for the test. I had better things to do with my GF. Meanwhile, other people were obsessed with memorizing answers for the test all day long.
