But why does the rope wrap around the central stick? That's the one thing they don't explain. It goes through the hole at the bottom of the central stick and the pulley is attached to that. There must be a reason that rope wraps around the central stick and the pulley isn't just tied to the bottom of the stick. Des anybody know?

my initial inkling from this rather poor animation is that it allows the rope to slide along the beam maintaining both stability and guidance. its an ARM, look at your arm, a bone, pulleys on both ends tied to the corners, the bone never bends, it is realigned by the "ropes" and anchor points. It appears to move freely but in reality it is tightly bound.
