Kids could buy this back in the 1970's off of Pharmacy shelves. A teenager found out it could self ignite and built some low strength little bombs in baby food jars. Lots of entertainment for bored kids back then.

No, it's a lantern. They call it lantern everywhere in the world.
The Brits call a flashlight a torch because they were replacing actual torches. Sticks on fire you take at night to look for something/someone or to torch some witch's house down
