President Donald Trump said in a social media post Sunday “I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz, to house America’s most ruthless and violent Offenders. We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social. “The reopening of Alcatraz will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and Justice.” CNN.

It's the only reason that makes any sense. Destroying a national park to build a new "island prison" would be retarded af if the goal were really to open a new prison. Build a prison in the horrific climate of Texas if you want to make the dregs of society uncomfortable.

Great idea - in theory. Alcatraz is beyond repair and will never open as a prison again unless the island is entirely razed.

However - why not build an American version of CECOT? If El Salvador did it then you know it's not expensive. I imagine the USA could do it for as little as 5x what it cost El Salvador.
