There are two "free mason" organizations: A false masonry and a real one. The false is the front, or 'foyer' (recruitment center) of the real.

Those who don't pass muster just keep getting moved up ranks in the foyer, never understanding they're just being sent deeper into plato's cave.

The real has only seven levels, and at any one time there is only one master mason at the highest level.

The secret password is four words corresponding to the four letters of YHWH, each with its own grip. The seven levels are decomposed into four tiers, a junior and a senior at each tier. Only the master mason stands alone in his tier.

The sixth tier's senior mason is master of rituals (as opposed to the foyer's mere master of ceremony), and only he knows who the master mason is among the lodge, who could be masquerading as a senior or junior at any tier.

Each tier learns one part of the grip and code phrase, and that identifies them. One half of this code is taught to the junior, and upon becoming a senior, they learn the other half for their tier from the junior of the next tier.

The highest two levels only meet once ever so many years, and during eclipses.

This was told to me by a mason before he died in a retirement home.

If it's fiction, it's good fiction.
