Whilst Jesus is dead both ways the question of who actually commited the crime gives a very different meaning to the rejection of Christ. If the Romans did it the question becomes why would the Romans kill someone who by their own words posed no threat to them? And if the pharisees killed them, it proves they rejected Christ.
