Maybe a better file format in time. Like maybe FLAC or Orbis would pickup. It made sense that physical media began to go by the wayside: Vinyl records, 8-Track tapes, cassette tapes, optical discs. We finally landed on the digital mp3 computer file format in that late 90s / early 2000s. Now you could curate your entire collection on a hard disk, Solid State Disk, or Memory Card.
That was the pinnacle. The peak. Now people use mobile phones which have less functionality than a desktop computer (Making the youth non-proficient with technology) and now they pay for streaming services. Didn’t see that coming.
For some of the bands and new music that I listen to, you can specially order printed vinyl discs for them.
While the modern record players, especially the good ones, start at around 300-400, they all are now pretty much digital audio converters. Don't get me wrong, the music sounds incredible. Especially with someone who understands audio compatibility and latency issues. Audio has become more of an expensive collectors hobby now, with more value coming out of the quality of speakers that you buy, along with the setup and maintenance.
Reminds me to hop on Bandcamp and check out the recent releases.
I remember I think it was Marc Cuban's first company sending radio over dialup. Which was kind of a ridiculous thing to do technically but it bypassed weird cost structure for data. You're sitting on a line designed to carry audio, albeit not well. Then you're making a PPP connection to the internet, then you're sending packetized audio. Some part of that doesn't make sense, but local calls were free and data and long distance weren't. So dialing a radio station in another city wasn't feasible. But you can squeeze voice over a 14.4 modem link.
You're right, way too many people do not understand how to curate their own data collection. Slsknet.org One of the original devs of Napster left well before it went corporate and started soul seek. It's still is running as strong as ever. Great source to find peers who also curate rare and top quality music that you are into
I would recommend getting the Ubuntu client called nicotine+
MP3s didn't go away, they're just used differently. If I'm not mistaken, they're the format streaming services other than Apple Music use for their libraries. If not MP3, it's Ogg Vorbis.
MP3 is a lossy compression and needs to be replaced. I use FLAC but my iPhone doesn’t play them with the native music player. I used to do iTunes Match for $25 a year upload your entire MP3 library to the cloud regardless of where it was purchased. Now we do the family plan for iTunes since we have kids. It does play many songs lossless so that’s good. I do not like paying for streaming service but it’s nice to have a large music library to choose from.
Some people can absolutely tell, even at high bitrates. Just like some people can immediately hear the missing frequency range on FM radio, even over a quality stereo, while most people would never notice.
Plus if you're generating an MP3 the size of what a lossless algorithm kicks out anyway, why bother with lossy?
I’m pretty sure you can still load up your phone with mp3s and listen for free. The cloud is where the cost is. If you have a large mp3 library, the Match service is great. $25 a year and your whole library is uploaded and you can listen on all Apple devices. I used it for years
People are idiots. iTunes was perfect. It was pay per play. You were able to create your own play list by buying from iTunes, or transferring musing from your own CD. It had the UI perfectly crafted for this use. Only limitation, it was proprietary made only for Apple iPhones and iPods.
Now Apple discontinued iTunes, and idiots are paying for subscriptions, for streaming services without owning anything.
Long story short, intelligent people are doomed, because the majority are illiterate imbeciles unable to use logic.
I can't wait until people use recording software on their phone to capture songs they like when they pop up on the streaming service. It'll be like listening to radio in the 80s-90s all over again!
I still torrent most things and only spend money on creators I support. I occasionally use the free youtube music app on my phone, but mostly because my car's cd player sucks and upgrading the stereo so I can plug in a memory stick seems like a waste. But it is disappointing that the era of ultimate consumer freedom has given way to corporate streaming apps.
How does a person torrent in the current era? Do you need a VPN or is it like the 2000s where you just download but torrent or a variation of torrent software?
Some friend invited me to a private torrent site like a decade ago. It doesn't have everything but there are new uploads regularly so I can find most things.
You just do it. I don't even bother with VPNs as most of them are dragnets operated by jews. This isn't hyperbole btw, ask if you want cites.
For safety, stay away from anything that is recent, or came out in the last year or so. I got a strike a few years back for the Ender's Game movie. Been clear otherwise.
Then I put them on a thumb drive (1350 songs so far) and play it thru my car radio. I have every song by every artist I ever loved. They download in 20 seconds to file. Nice.
Every song is now found on YouTube. Perfect! I started downloading music to MP3 when Napster first came out. No more of that clunky system.
I have enough music to drive from Florida to California without repeats.
I use https://www.4kdownload.com/ app. I paid the $15 so I could just drop an entire playlist in and it grabs the whole thing.
I also had an mp3 split app, so if I had long mix songs, it would split the huge song into slices, and also fill out the mp3 tags, etc, you just had to feed it a csv, which I used excel to make a template for. Worked great, I have a super huge synthwave collection
Yea and you cant get them to download anything. They think the internet will always be there.
They are gonna lose all the files one day. Believe it or not there are shows and songs that are no longer "out there".
The first episode of Dr Who is a black and white pilot. I have it, and when I lost my copy it was not easy to find it again. Next time, it will probably be impossible. It probably won't be on netflix.
It may not be "our history" but it is an event from history "so and so made a show about so and so and we watched it" There are ideas in there, and I don't like losing ideas.
If you show kids old shows, they 100% understand when they see "people didn't always act this way" They can also be used to demonstrate the slippery slope they led us down for certain issues.
I know what ya mean. I love old horror movies and if they get a blu ray or 4k release it's a boutique company that wants $50 or so for it. Don't get me wrong they put in work restoring then but dang.
The recording and tech industries do NOT want you playing you own digital recordings, or holding a physical copy of their media/music.
Apple, Youtube, and etc. have specifically designed the software and services to force streaming, and prohibit you from holding content on your device.
All this forces you to pay2play, or watch ads along with content.
Big music sucks. But spending the time to track down a good artist/musician is a bit much for most. Without the jew-owned music industry we'd have a shitload of good music around every corner. And even the time to enjoy it.
Also the browsers refuse to support live streaming ironically, forcing the sites you do see do it, to make their own web assembly player to help limit which sites support live streaming.
AI coding is already useable if you know what you're doing. I might see if I can get AI to build me a music player in the Android SDK... haven't written Java for years (and never Kotlin) but I bet I could pick it up again if I can find the time.
