Popes aren't perfect. Remember that in Catholic tradition, Peter was the first pope. And Peter really got a lot of things wrong.

If you use Peter as the benchmark for what to expect from a pope, you'll see that they aren't some object of worship, they are just the inheritor of a respected position of an earthly government.
