The pope is no saviour. But, as a role within a type of earthly government, there is a calling to respect the position.

And the topic of the pope often comes down to the question of legitimate vs illegitimate government, and corrupt vs uncorrupted politician. There's definitely room for good discussion. If the pope said to do something that conflicted with one's conscience, even Catholics would question and reject it altogether if it was irreconcilable.

That's generally how the historical schisms have formed. As a result of differences in perspective that seemingly were not given the attention and care they were owed in order to remedy them.

There are examples in history where schisms were healed. It takes great patience and understanding to get to the point of looking beyond the words to see what is really meant behind them.

The structure and function of the vatican isn't too dissimilar to that of Protestant synods that dictate policies and resource allocation. When you start to realize that the reformist movement essentially just swapped one religious government for another you may start to agree that the Vatican isn't as objectionable as some voices make it out to be.

And, as much as there is scandal with crimes perpetrated and hidden by that government from the Vatican, at least the Catholic churches overwhelmingly keep their values and do not bend the knee to anti-Christian wokism. We see many Protestant churches fall victim to promoting ideologies antithetical to Christian values. And why do we see this on such a large scale? Because individual Protestant churches are often beholden to large synods with their own shady politicians that agree to policies that aren't in everyone's interest.

I was Lutheran before I joined the Catholic Church. One of the last straws was seeing the rainbow pamphlets show up in the Lutheran church, and hearing the "rent-a-pastor" spewing bad theology while the church was looking for a permanent replacement through the synod for the old retired pastor. The old retired pastor was great, and he didn't like what he was seeing being dictating from the synod. The irony is that when I went through the process of joining the Catholic Church, the doctrine from what I was raised with and what the Catholic Church holds were so similar I was accepting into the Church community with more or less a few hours of conversation and a few rites.

Replacing the Lutheran synod with the Catholic Magisterium wasn't a hard choice.

Community is important, and community is guided by larger governments (usually). You might think your church community is doing well, but all it takes is your gem of a pastor to vacate the position through retirement or death and suddenly your community will find itself more or less at the whims of that higher government. Most people don't think about it. Most protestant Christians don't even realize that there are synods.

To sum up everything I'm getting at, I think you might just have a wrong impression about what many Catholics feel about the papacy. And about what the role of the papacy is compared to other forms of Christianity.
