Well the Dutch traders dumped their stock of that type of fabric in West Africa when the fashion fell out of trend in Netherlands, but before it became popular there the reason that type of clothing became popular in the first place was because it was a novelty since the designs were based off an Indonesian style of clothing called batik.

The reason the Dutch had so much of this clothing with culturally appropriated Indonesian design is because the Dutch found a less expensive, less laborious, and faster method if producing these designs, but most Indonesian wanted the products made with the authentic traditional method because it imbued the cloth with a distinct musky aroma from the natural and gand made wax printing method.

The Dutch used two alternative methods for printing the Indonesian designs: block printing and roller printing. Neither method were invented by the Dutch, and thus was another example of cultural appropriation.
