How do people use smartphones on the modern day internet?

submitted by Niggly_Puff to technology 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 19:06:35 ago (+5/-0)     (technology)

Got a new phone. It took like 3 days setting it up, way more time consuming than setting up a PC, but in the end I have a clean experience with no ads or bullshit. Full control. Just enough google malware and allowed connections to enable push notifications. But damn... to think people use these things how they come from the factory is insane.

Ads. litterally. everywhere.

You can't simply put a youtube video on and watch it. Because every few minutes an ad comes on and it STAYS ON THE SCREEN till you manually press a button to get back to the video, so waiting 30-60 seconds for the ad to end is pointless. You have to let the gods at google know you are there and physically touch your device to continue their feed of dopamine. Every 3-5 minutes. Forget multitasking or playing a video in the background.

It's everywhere, every app, every website non-stop. The amount of power and bandwidth spent sending in ads and sending out your data is criminal. Is it any better on Iphone? I doubt that. Apple fan boys are generally even worse because they're superficial. I'd take a rooted $100 Android over your $1000 iphone any day.

And most people put up with it. It's their every day experience. A new phone is like a used condom. Have some respect for yourself.

Most people aren’t sapient. That’s really all there is to it.

Not sure if sapient is the right word. I'd replace it with curious.

I thought about selling phones with everything ripped out, in a workable respectable state. But would people even care or see the value in that?

[ - ] Her0n 1 point 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 19:34:08 ago (+1/-0)

Sadly no, they wouldn't. The people who care learn how to get around it like you have

Given all the tutorials I see on how to decrapify phones, I'd guess at least some would "see the value in that". Doubtless a limited market, as most idiots have long since surrendered to the spies and advertisers.

curious

That’s sapience. Individual self-awareness combined with the mental capacity for intro- and extrospection.

There’s a tiny market for it. There are custom phones being sold with a custom OS that has zero tracking from any of the big companies. There are even more custom phones that are physically modular, with each module having a physical “off” switch for when you want even more security. There are tutorials for de-googling your existing android phone, too.

Use it as a reactive target!

I just use youtube in brave. No ads. The app is garbage. There's also youtube vanced, but that takes a bit more effort.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 1 point 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 19:34:58 ago (+1/-0)

NewPipe is what you want.

The UI is sort of ugly but this works flawlessly with zero effort. Ty.

It doesn't support logging into google but you can have a local offline subscriptions which I prefer. If you want to comment or whatever then use Brave.

I use rooted android phones. Have for least 15 years.
I used to do it myself, and I also bricked a couple.
I found a guy who does it well so I buy from him.
I don't see ads.
I use enough Google to run Maps and a very few apps.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 0 points 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 19:56:14 ago (+0/-0)

Same. I keep Maps around, it's gotten me out of some situations. I need to look into alternatives.

[ - ] BoozyB 2 points 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 20:22:29 ago (+2/-0)

I recently installed an app called GMaps WV from F-Droid app site.
I haven't had an opportunity to test it.
I think it opens a webview off google maps, not sure how it works.

The first thing I do is dump the bloatware, the problem is that much of the bloatware isn't removable unless you root it.

I have a tablet for work and ape finger me keeps finding them broken after they've somehow frisbee'd their way down the hall. And then I get a new one. I'm getting pretty good at it now after the fourth time......setting it up anyway.

It's fucked, we're digital cattle and I'd just as soon not get the shock collar.

3 days to set up a phone and can't figure out how to watch YouTube without ads? Get brave or Firefox with ublock origin. Enjoy your ad free internet

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 1 point 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 20:32:44 ago (+1/-0)

Says the normie relying on default options. "Oh look, my phone came with Facebook! How convenient!".

Get brave or Firefox with ublock origin.

Yeah this is better than nothing. But there's a lot more than goes on in a phone. It's a full-fledged computer. Absolute control should be the default. You should want and demand that control. Anything less is ridiculous.

Newpipe, pipe pipe both on fdroid, there are others, I haven't seen a you tube ad in years

Sal is a fucking Tard.

Years ago I used to degoogle my phones and root. Put different roms on, graphene was pretty good all in all, there are a few out there still that are good, on the whole now I use a Sony w595, does what I need it to do and connects to the car and earphones.

I use my android with an app named" netguard" it's basically an app where I can grant access to the internet or not to apps on my phone, there aren't many apps that have that access now, also allows you to restrict processes.

My phone did not come with facebook. My point still stands 3 days to set up your phone and you still have ads? Ok boomer

Where did I say I have ads? That issue has long been taken care of. I'm still not done setting it up the phone. Still working on the host file.

Ok boomer

The fact you're calling me a boomer tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.

[ - ] Sal_180 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 05:48:52 ago (+0/-0)

Ads. litterally. everywhere.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 05:51:22 ago (+0/-0)

That's when I was testing the phone before I started work on it.

[ - ] Sal_180 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 05:55:02 ago (+0/-0)

You're still too retarded to get youtube with no ads? 20 second fix, shorter than an actual ad.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 05:55:59 ago (+0/-0)

Where did I say I have trouble removing ads on youtube? That literally a single app. I talked about it in this thread.

[ - ] RollinDaGrassTyson 0 points 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 21:54:23 ago (+0/-0)

I struggle to think of anything more emasculating than using a smartphone.

It is a form factor designed for a lower strata of society.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 0 points 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 22:13:10 ago (+0/-0)

What do you use?

[ - ] RollinDaGrassTyson 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 10:28:06 ago (+0/-0)

No phone

And no, I am not a geriatric

[ - ] Trope 2 points 2 monthsApr 12, 2025 23:06:08 ago (+2/-0)

I try not to use the phone for leisure.

I have a tablet which serves me well as I sit my lazy arse on the couch.

[ - ] Hobama 1 point 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 00:29:23 ago (+1/-0)

Ive had to start coding my own phone apps and pc programs to do basic shit that used to be free and simple

[ - ] Niggly_Puff [op] 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 00:44:11 ago (+0/-0)

I've started exploring this route as well. Have been getting familiar with the Android SDK and Kotlin. Many motivations but a recent one is upon getting this phone set up I went to download this nice suite of basic phone apps with no ads or trackers. Has a calendar, notepad, dialer, contacts, etc. They are simple yet sleek. I couldn't find them on f-droid. WTF? Checked google play and there they are, no longer free and/or loaded with ads and other crap, eliminating the whole point of them. Fortunately the author believed in good open source programs at some point because they are still on github.

https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools

I've forked all the tools, if they ever stop working I will update them myself.

Now let's see Paul Allens LAPTOP.

I haven't seen that one since the 90s!

[ - ] Prairie 1 point 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 04:40:08 ago (+1/-0)

Use an ad-blocking browser. And FFS browse the Internet on your PC whenever you can. Phone is just when you HAVE to search for something or get information when away from home.

[ - ] Anus_Expander 0 points 2 monthsApr 13, 2025 07:56:15 ago (+0/-0)

My free Android serves me very well. I only use it to text or make the rare call. It's also my internet hotspot for laptop, I have no cable or internet at home.
