Well, because it isn't. It just got conquered by romance-language speaking people who didn't like all those nasty English-sounding words.
English has very few words that derive from "old anglisch" as it were. I think it has more old Norse and old French influences, but it's a real mixed up language. We borrowed words from everyone and had our own words supressed for a long long time.
Try reading even something as recent as Chaucer without a translation - it's basically unreadable (but interesting!)
